Blue NM-2

Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.
About Solaris | Guide to Solaris | Prologue
Blue NM-2 is a Sentinel; a living weapon. It has been provided for Project Ikarus from Neptune. Even in the low humidity atmosphere of Mercury it poses a notable threat, but has been deemed acceptable considering the consequences of failure.   Blue NM-2 is currently maintained on Penumbra, Mercury. It has the ability to remotely manipulate and to a lesser extent create liquids. Blue NM-2's destructive capacity can be controlled by limiting its access to said liquids.

Abilities

They keep it in the pods mostly, the air here must be torture. Have you seen it fight? It pulled their blood out of their wounds like ribbons, and skewered them upon their own life force. If I hadn't seen it, I would never have believed it.
— Describing Blue NM-2 in combat
Blue NM-2 was selected for the Sentinel program at a young age after showing an early aptitude for precognition. These precognitive abilities have withered as typical for Sentinel Training. Its sensory abilities, however, are still strong.   Developing and honing Blue NM-2's inate capability for hydrokinesis has been the focus of its training. Blue NM-2 is most potent with water, with which it may also control the other phases such as ice or steam.

Halfway to the crawler, Eun expresses the thought she’s been chewing on. “You and the Commodore, you both keep calling her ‘it’.”   “Well, it’s a weapon,” Loes says confusedly. “It only looks like a person. Well, and was made from a person. But y’know...”

They made people into weapons and are surprised some still treat them as people? Silly command. Though you'd expect them to be prepared for the possibility, so they can avoid a scenario where people try to 'free' said weapons.   Also: Cute! And deadly! Eun has great taste.

Sentinels are usually deployed in the Kuiper belt and are only in touch with their Warden and very, very rarely other Sentinels, so there wasn't much of a worry about how people outside of the system might interact with them until some of them were provided for Project Ikarus, but yes, very well observed! There's absolutely a lack of foresight from the command here.   Thank you! Eun and Blue both, I think ^^

Blue is a great character, but I'm enraged on her behalf!!! >:( Every time they say "it"... And also they keep her lock in a pod at all time when she's not fighting???   Did she get special treatment to become a weapon, or was it all just training and indoctrination?

Blue absolutely deserves better! It's inhumane, and it isn't like it makes it better that it's inhumane on purpose!   And yes, when Blue isn't fighting she's preserved in a pod. They don't lock it, but she's not conscious when in the pod, so she couldn't just decide to leave. It's basically like everything is put on pause, so as far as she's experiencing it, life is leaving the pod, being briefed, fighting, then returning to the pod... and repeat that.   As for any special treatment: training and indoctrination about sums it up. I want to expand upon it more when I write the article about the Sentinel program.
