Elphia Oakvale

This is a passage from a controversial book published in Valesburg around 540E2 regarding the history of the former kingdom of Altharas. Sages across The Free Cities of Palanthas are uncertain about it's authenticity since a lot of the records were lost when the city burned down during king Avarus Ravenburn's reign.
-------------------------------------   Elphia Oakvale was a Wood Elven ranger, huntress and fletcher from a small village called Khlen to the north of Altharas who lived from roughly 2980E1 to 3070E1 of the human calendar. She was born into a family of forest rangers that provided meat and other commodities to the people of the village. Although as the traditions of the elves respect and aim to preserve nature, someone was going to hunt in those woods regardless, so it might as well have been them.   One fateful day the red dragon Xelzrag chose Khlen as its target. The dragon was mighty and feared across the kingdom. The village was utterly defenseless and the attack came as a surprise. Elphia was in the woods nearby as she saw a large shadow cast across the land. She looked up and saw the beast, headed towards her beloved home. She ran as fast as she could, wanting to protect her family and the tight-knit community of the village.   But she was too late. Most of the village had already burnt down, and the dragon was feasting on the poor villagers trying to escape. Elphia's eyes filled with rage as they gazed upon the destruction. She readied a shot and aimed at the beast, hitting it in the back and drawing its attention.   At this point, the Goddess of Hunting, Agepa, who was watching the battle from her divine realm was very impressed with this young elf. She did not simply run for her life, becoming the hunted. Instead, she was the hunter. The dragon was nothing but prey. The goddess decided to make the ensuing battle more evenly matched. She blessed Elphia's bow, her trusty hunting longbow that the elf herself had crafted. The weapon itself prior to this enchantment had been nothing spectacular, made from typical white oak. This bow has later been known to have become Whirlwind, one of the four Dragonsbane weapons.   Thus, the battle between a mighty dragon and a single wood elf ended up being closer than expected. In fact, the dragon eventually fell to the might of the bow, but not before it's claws ripped a mortal wound in Elphia's chest. As the surviving villagers witnessed the battle conclude and ran to congratulate and celebrate the elf's victory, she succumbed to the bleeding in their arms.   ------------------------   Further history regarding what happened to the bow afterward can be found in it's own article, Whirlwind.
