The Desolation
A region of the continent south of Undland north of the Free Fjords reaching from Baekje to the Hana no ōi tochi. Famed anomalous islands and unnatural sea movements. The area is famed for its Sea elf and Giant ruins and the valuables adventurers may find within.
Geography
The Desolation has no set consistent geographic traits, in fact there are some who claim to believe it has no constant state at all. That is known about the region is it is rich with islands both natural and unnatural. Explorers note that many islands are collections of rocky debris from what must have been a greater subcontinent or singular island. The waters here are completely unpredictable. Despite the constant easterly current found in the waters south, and westerly current north, the desolation current obeys no set rules. Storms, whirlpools, sneaker waves, magical storms. Many sailors fear worst of all the sudden end of all currents and winds. Many ships have been traps and thirst overtaking crews as ships are trapped motionless. What islands here are noted for their on average barren rocky formations dotted with ruins, often battered by rain or sudden storms.
Localized Phenomena
The entire field of the desolation is covered with wildmagic field, the weave itself is distorted here and spells such as divination completely fail while targeting areas within the Desolation. Many translocation magic have lead to wild results when trying to land within the region and magic effects flex and give in terms of power, growing more chaotic further in. Waves of magical energy can be felt called emissions that can be as deadly as storms, the power of which is noted for damaging engines and electronics as physics is momentarily altered.
As spoken of before these magical emissions are effecting the natural currents of the water and wind, deepening an already storm heavy cyclone area within the natural circular air currents. These waves have also lead the area to be very physically active, new islands forming rapidly. Along with that anomalous magic, items and other effects of in-numerous effects can be found in the massive ruins found throughout.
These magic waves may also be responsible for the dangerous wildlife than researches believes should be natural as well as the simple variation despite the barrenness of a bulk of the isles. It also effects tempature, as the Desolation is noted for being colder and moister than it should be given the winds. However temperature spikes to jungle producing highs, and snowing lows while not the rule are common enough that most sailors through the reason have noted an experience with these weather pocket phenomena.
Fauna & Flora
The islands seem to be able to grow any number of life. Beasts and monstrosities are common, and emissions can transforms foreign bodies. The average island in the desolation tends to be rocky and mostly barren however, full of rain battered rocks and struggling plantlike, caves or ruins can find more respite for life. However some researchers have noted islands covered in silent jungles, or forests located inside lightless caves. One must travel prepared for any sort of natural weather. The waters range between rich with fish and monsters to light and dead for unknown pockets thought many researchers believe it is the native marine life migrating based on magical emissions, sailors seem to agree, for long periods of no sealife is seen to foretell of a coming emission.
History
The region based on the ruins available seems to have once been a fairly populous region full of Sea Elf cities and even a home to the storm giants that once lived often by the sea. Some first Empire ruins can be found, but most believe them to be floating cities or research labs. As such most experts agree that once it was a stable healthy costal region that suffered some horrible downfall, usually this is assumed to be remains of The First Calamity in local myths and legions, as some surviving first empire records mention the region as anomalous as it is to this day. There have been attempts to settle this region, and most sea powers have bases on the outskirts even if their names and locations are well kept secrets.
Tourism
Adventurers frequent the area to find and trade in the anomalies relics and valuables. Some Researchers travel to the area hoping to unlock the mysteries of its reality bending properties.
