Kaiosis Fire Bug

Kaiosis Fire Bugs, also called Donorian Fire Bugs and Kaiosis Bugs, are insects native to Donora.

Appearance

They are oval bugs, about the length of an inch, with iridescent coloring. They have four sets of legs and a set of wings that are the same size as their body. They have small eyes and short antennae.   They have a special organ in their abdomen that creates a chemical reaction that causes them to glow which they can use to glow and flash in a few different colors.

Biology

Diet

Their diet is mainly plant matter, like leaves and roots in larvae form, and nectar and pollen when they are adults.

Behavior

In springtime, their mating season, the bugs glow bright pink and yellow and fly in formations. It is believed that they use different glow colors and flash patterns to communicate with each other.   Kaiosis Fire Bugs hatch from eggs as small larvae, the time between laying and hatching of eggs is normally around a month or two. After hatching from their eggs the larvae burrow underground and hibernate as they wait to mature. This hibernation period can last up to three or four years, before waking up and shedding their caterpillar form and emerging from their burrows in their adult forms which were described earlier. After developing into their adult for they normally only live for a few weeks, long enough to eat and reproduce, before dying.

Uses

They are prey for many species from Donora. In their larvae form, many creatures root around in the dirt for them, digging them up and eating them; some Donorian Dishes call for Kaiosis fire bug larvae as an ingredient and they are a good source of protein. In their adult form they are prey for many creatures, but they are not used as often by Donorians once they reach maturity.   They are quite pretty and their lifecycle is very fascinating for many people, as are their fancy springtime glowing formations; this has led to the Kaosis fire bug watching a popular pastime on Donora in the springtime.
