Wisp
The wilds are dangerous and many a traveller have seemingly been swallowed up by nature. Drowned in swamps, ambushed by predators, caught by avalanches, the ways to die are numerous. Those who die suddenly and in panic sometimes remains afterwards, the shock of their dead binding them to the spheres. On some of them, over the many years they haunt the wilds, begin to forget whom they were in the first place. Eventually, their forms shift and fade along their memories, until all that remains is a ghostly ball of light.
Wisps run on almost pure emotion and can be very childish, if not downright immature as a result. Wisps rarely focus on anything beyond the immediate moment, flickering from spot to spot looking for something to catch their attention. Not malicious, but quite amoral, wisps are known to pull pranks on whomever they run into. Should that someone be annoying, the wisps might just pull a prank that result in more wisps, luring the offender into the deep swamps or the den of a vicious predator.
Wisps themselves are also capable of fighting if provoked. They are quite evasive and can blink short distances to avoid attacks. Spellcasters should be very careful, as wisps can grab spells hurled at them and send it flying right back at them.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Wisps take the form of small balls of ethereal light, most commonly white but wisps of all colors have been documented. They are surrounded by a constant shield of animistic energy, which protects them from harm. They are not only bright, but also quite warm to the touch. Neither fire nor light can hurt them, but wisps despise the cold.
Being incredible simple of form, wisps can easily repair their incorporeal form, unless ice has been used to damage them.
Genetics and Reproduction
Wisps arise from those lost in the wilderness, who over the passing of years slowly forget who they were.
Ecology and Habitats
Wisps can be found in a large variety of wilderness areas.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Wisps can sustain themselves purely off ambient animatic energy.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Wisps that live close to one another may form small gangs, grouping together to pull pranks, dance together or engage in other activities. Due to their chaotic nature, such groupings are very unstable, prone to splitting up in rivalries, then merging again once the wisps all stop caring enough about the subject to fight over it. Other beings that can handle their puckish nature can become treasured friends of the wisps and they can be quite protective.
