Empire of the Palatines
"The Palatines never forgave us. To this day in Atrans you can hear them curse our name and cry that the elves took away their dominion. In truth, their grip was breaking with or without us. We simply swept away the remnant."Centered on the north shores of the Palatin Sea, the Empire of the Palatines is ruled from the city of Atrans. One of the great human empires, Palatina was old 200 years ago but persists to this day, though its claim of empire is more dubious now. Having lost their subject countries in Khely and Valeny, Palatina no longer controls even most of the shores of their namesake sea, and the empire has mostly been reduced to the core Palatine lands, the foothills of the Sevestres, and those parts of southern Rovs that are not in open revolt. The legacy of the Palatines is apparent across the shores of the Palatin Sea, from the roads they built to the tombs of their general and emperors in the lands they conquered. Palatine names are still somewhat common among the elites of the realms of Khely and Valeny, even though the Palatines did not make any major efforts to spread their religion or culture in their subject countries during their heyday.
Structure
Though named an empire and having an emperor, the senate in Atrans has been a far more enduring organization than the imperial throne. The senate has secured a traditional veto over the coronation of a new emperor, and though the throne has been hereditary by convention, the senate has on occasion derailed the imperial succession. The senate itself has long since become dominated by the old senatorial families and their descendants, forming a political upper class that wields true power in the halls of Atrans.
Demography and Population
Most citizens of Palatina are Palatine humans. There is a substantial goblinoid minority in both Rovs and Sevestres. However, the humans and goblins of Rovs are both considered a disloyal people and is under occupation by the Senatorial Legions. The Sevestres are the descendants of a Marching Horde that settled in Palatina hundreds of years ago, and are considered a distinct, but integrated group.
