Rovsan war

Beginning with the reading of the Constitution of the Rada in Ovilkrai, the province of Rovs has been in open revolt against their overlords since 507, and fighting has intensified in the last two years, though the conflict has been somewhat stalled since the Palatines' capture of Soterum in 510.

The Conflict

Prelude

Rovsan independence had been a long time coming, as Palatina had been waning for decades and centuries, and the only other non-Palatine territory belonging to the empire had been granted autonomy long ago. The lords of Rovs had long agitated for a more equitable and less tributary relationship with Atrans, and the freeholders of Rovs wished for similar political rights to those enjoyed by Palatine citizens.

Neither were forthcoming, and sensing weakness in Atrans in the wake of the Pordinian War, the Rovsans declared independence, and threw out the Palatine governor.

The Palatine response was sluggish and it took until late 508 for the legions to be raised to campaign in Rovs. Led by senator Marcus Seius, the legions first moved for Soterum.

Deployment

The Rovsans chose not to engage Seius' legions directly, and instead sought to bait the Palatines into costly sieges. The legions trudged through the countryside on the way to Soterum, suffering minor setbacks but making gradual progress. The Rovsans had planned to gather their own strength and then break the legions once they were pinned down sieging Soterum.

Instead, Valenti Hagin surrendered the city to Marcus Seius, throwing Vuksan Krall's plans into disarray. The legions were able to use Soterum as a forward base to assault the rest of Rovs, though such efforts have been slow.

Battlefield

Most of the fighting has been concentrated in the lands north of Soterum, with seasonal lulls as the armies have wintered. Though Vuksan Krall has vowed to retake Soterum and put Valenti Hagin's head on a pike, Soterum itself has been largely spared the fighting in the most recent stage of the war.

Since Soterum, Marcus Seius has been unable to make significant gains, and though he has sacked villages and the legions continue to make a nuisance of themselves in Rovsan lands, they have been defeated on occasion by the armies at Vuksan Krall's command.

Outcome

The war continues, as the Rovsans have been unable to decisively defeat the Palatine legion in a pitched battle. However, as none of he major fortifications in Rovs have fallen to Seius, the senators in Atrans have been increasingly critical of his command and there have been more and more calls for him to be replaced as commander of the Palatine legions in Rovs.

Vuksan Krall continues to enjoy robust support among the lords of Rovs as he continues to defend their holdings against the Palatine legions, though war weariness among the common people has begun to rise.

The passing of armies looting and foraging in the Rovsan countryside has resulted in the sack of many villages in the southern parts of Rovs, though the northern parts remain relatively untouched by the war.
