Duro

A planet that once teemed with life, Duro is now but a shell of its former glory. Due to decisions by past Duros, the planet is almost completely uninhabited due to toxic atmosphere that even the most hardy of sentient races can barely stand. Abandoning the planet and choosing to create massive habitat platforms within the gravity well of the planet, the Duros economy has transitioned from industrial to commercial due to constraints in living space. With almost half of the platforms dedicated to space ports and storage, it is one of the main trading hubs throughout the galaxy - with many businesses keeping a headquarters somewhere on the platforms.

Climate

Heavily altered from over-industrialization, most of the planet is uninhabitable due to large amounts of toxins and radiation throughout the atmosphere. Centuries of mismanagement have left the environment completely devastated, with the only remaining life being the deformed Fefze beetles and several extremely resistant plant species. Close to the equator, several massive air scrubbers have been built which allow for workers with protective gear to continue mining operations beneath the surface of Duro.

Lifeforms

Non-Sentient

Only one species is known to still live on the heavily polluted planet. Some theorize that deep terrestrial creatures may still live under the surface, but no reliable observations have been documented to validify the claim.

Fefze Beetle - Once a race of semi-sentient hive mind insects, the species suffered a devolution mutation in response to generational living in highly polluted environment. Now they are aggressive omnivores that will attack on sight as they hunger for meat, a rare delicacy on a planet with no other creatures.

Sentient

While many different species pass through the trade ports above Duros, the main residents among the platforms are Duros and Humans.

Duros - Descendants of those who once lived on the surface, the bulk population on the habitat platforms consist of the Duros. From government workers to repairmen, all aspects of life on the stations are run by them. The few food processing plants remaining on the surface are also solely comprised of Duros employees.

Humans - Most humans on the stations have been sent there by one company or another to ensure their interests are being taken care of on such a large trading station. Often seen in commercial and industrial areas, humans are infrequently seen on the surface but may be there to review mining projections at the Ranada Facility.

History

Duro is a prime example of the potential dangers that can happen when a civilization acquires technology that they are not quite ready to use. An early entry into galactic civilization due to their inner galaxy position, Duro made contact with many various species during industrial and early spaceflight development of their planet. Having contact with races far more advanced than their own created a golden age of technological and industrial innovation across the world leading to the construction of massive factory complexes to produce the goods needed to compete on an interplanetary scale. This would ultimately prove to be Duro's downfall, as the mighty construction projects and massive production caused a massive shift in the atmospheric contents that led to a global shift in habitability. Before the Duros knew what had happened, massive extinction events took place all over the planet, along with massive famines and pandemics due to toxified air. It was only by sheer chance that they survived - during the early stages of sith expansion resources were allocated to constructing massive resource depots above the planet, which in there desperate need the Duros government retrofitted into the first habitat platforms for mass migration. Over the next few decades, the Duros quickly adapted, eventually thriving in these conditions, and now live a space-centered life with various unique technologies coming from an entire race that lives in space.

Notable Settlements

Ranada Mining Facility

The only active settlement planet side, the Ranada facility is half a mining facility and half a salvage company that seeks to claim the leftover resources planet side that can either be used on the stations or sold off for a tidy profit. Mainly consisting of droid workers, with the few humanoids on-site wearing full body environmental gear, the operation is the only Duro government sanctioned operation that is allowed to remain on the planet. The Ithorian Restoration League has petitioned several times to be allowed to help reclaim the planet, but all efforts have been rebuked by the Sith Empire, alleging that would allow The Republic a path for spy infiltration.

Bburru Station

The capital of Duro, and the largest of the orbiting habitat platforms, Bburru rivals many other planet capitals for its sheer size and population. Originally a storage complex for orbital trade, it was the first station to be built and house the immigrants from the surface. Massive additions have been added over the years, creating a vast network of districts throughout - one of the more prominent ones being a massive arboretum that contains the last remaining specimens of Duros flora.

Jivv Station

A commerce and leisure habitat, Jivv is a place where you can find whatever you need - whether it be a product or service. With large luxury areas for entertainment and huge swathes of shopping complexes, many seek this stations out as a place to vacation from the tedium of their home planets. Most major corporations also have a headquarter on the station due to the high volume of traffic it sees. Massive docking and storage facilities on its underbelly allow for the storage of an almost infinite variety of products, and quite a few hidden niches for the less-than-legal businesses to set up.

Jyvvus Station

On the opposite side of the planet, Jyvvus is the main industrial platform for Duro. With several hundred docking bays and shipyards, it is one of the main spaceship producing hubs in the galaxy. With various companies using this as a base for their shipping fleets, it can see thousands, if not millions, of ships each day for repair and maintenance. Out of the three main stations, this one has the most diverse population - as many engineers from across the galaxy come to train and learn about the various ships and how to properly take care of them.
