The Republic
Wounded Galactic Power
Founded in the Year 0 CSC (25,053 BBY), the Republic is the longest functioning galactic government throughout history. Formed on the principle of mutual cooperation and trade, the Republic has gone through periods of varying strength and inefficiency, as well as several golden ages. Governed via a senate system where each planets' government sends their own delegate, the major decisions on economic and political issues are decided on a majority basis. This form of ruling, while more democratic, has led to much more bureaucracy than the Sith Empire - a problem often brought up by those dissatisfied by the slow response time when dealing with crises and controversial subjects.
History
Having been around for a little over 21,000 years the Republic has seen the rise and fall of numerous civilizations, both allies and rivals. For the past 7,000 years their greatest rival has been the Sith Empire, a government with ideals on the opposite end of the spectrum - order over freedom, relying heavily on the dark side of the force. Several major wars have been fought between the two during that time, leading to major events like the despoliation of Duro and the decimation of Telos.
Recently, Republic power has been ebbing due to hemorrhaging from the loss of many jedi masters and the damage done by Darth Malak and the Sith Triumvirate. Taking losses of their own, the Empire signed a cease fire treaty with the Senate as both sides focused on licking their wounds. This treaty has been under major strain as major disasters have strained the resources of both governments, making them see one another as the perfect scapegoat to distract their citizens from internal struggles.
Relations
Sith Empire
The main rival of the Republic is the Sith Empire, the only other major interstellar government with the resources and manpower to go against them. Due to a fundamental difference in political philosophy, the two powers have been in a centuries long battle to gain a foothold over the other. Each of them have seen their own rise and fall of power throughout the ages, with territory switching between them based on the current political climate. As of now, they are currently in a cold war detente but still fight against one another through proxy wars and black ops.
The Exchange
While they have no love for one another, the Republic feels they have more immediate concerns than trying to topple a criminal empire. With their amorphous nature, effectively combating their operations would be too time consuming and would leave the republic open to attacks by the Sith. The Exchange also dealt a critical blow to the Republic's pride when they took over the political power on Coruscant after they were forced to relinquish control of the world after the turmoil caused by the Triumvirate. While they publicly disavow those in the criminal underworld, reality is often the opposite as they are condoned due to their usefulness in aiding operations behind enemy lines.
Czerka Corp
The current relation between the Republic and Czerka is entirely a business one; as the largest financial and production company in the galaxy they play a critical role in manufacturing many things needed to run a multi-planet government, from starships to administrative droids to farming equipment. Much of the good will they used to have was lost when the deep-seated corruption within the company was discovered. While a massive culture shift and reform has been happening within the company, the Republic is still wary until it can be proven without a doubt that they are capable of being trusted once more.
Ithorian Restoration League
Many leaders within the Republic praise the initiatives of the I.R.L. in their efforts to revitalize worlds destroyed by war and industrial contamination. The technologies developed by the group have been used on many worlds in order to reduce sentient impacts to local environments while improving quality of life for rural citizens. Their friendly relations have been tarnished recently due to the emergence of the splinter group known as the Life Liberty Front, an ecoterrorist army that seeks to fix ecosystems through militant means.
