Manifestation

The scholar skill reflects formal training, whether that may be classwork at an educational institution or self-directed research. It usually is chosen with a Specialization in mind. A "Scholar: Mathematics" would have expertise in theorems, principles, and methodologies.
That skill would not apply to any sort of applied experience.
The separate Knowledge skill of Mathematics is where all that glorious number-crunching overlaps with the world outside the university campus. Live calculations of ballistic variables? Mathematics! Statistical modeling to figure out where the Black Hats have their current hideout? Mathematics!
Every application on this Cornell University webpage of mathematic concepts applied to The Case of the Week, these are all the Mathematics skill in action. Some participants contribute their own Specializations, some of this work crosses over to also employ the Scholar: Mathematics skill, but ultimately this adventurous problem-solving is all math.
