Downwoods
The Downwoods is a wild region of floodplain forest, known for its periodic flooding, which deposits saltwater and nutrient-rich sediments, which over time develops into hardy ferns useful for potion-making. Longleaf pines are the most common tree, shedding needles which pad the forest floor and accumulate into a loose peat.
Geography
Flatter and lower elevation, the Downwoods often floods either by storm water from the ocean or rain water during summer storms or long periods of winter drizzle. Slightly elevated dirt roads lined by run-off ditches help keep travel open, although sometimes the water rises past this level, creating a swampy land mass with pines overhead.
