Khassis Desert (Kah-sis)

Located in Southern Aetelan, the Khassis Desert is a vast stretch of sandy dunes dotted with mountains and oases, with a Great River running through it. Between the extreme heat, scarcity of arable land, and the ease with which one could get lost, not many are willing to travel through this region, much less try to live in it. Out of the many races of Taeva, only the snake-like Sythssya have managed to successfully build a life in this region, but even then there are still some places in the desert not even they would dare go.

Geography

The Khassis Desert, like any other desert, consists of vast stretches of sandy dunes and rocky mountains, dotted with the occasional oasis. The Great River that runs through the desert is considered the most valuable part of this region, as it's responsible for allowing the Sythssya people and others to survive living in such an inhospitable region.

Ecosystem Cycles

Due to the intense heat during the day, most creatures spend the daytime hours hiding in mountain caves or near an oasis, trying to keep exposure to the sun and heat to a minimum. Most creatures only really become active during the late evening hours, when the temperature has gone down to a more comfortable level.

Localized Phenomena

The Khassis Desert is home to a number of natural phenomena related to wind and sand, including dust devils and sandstorms of varying size and strength. The Khassis Desert also occasionally experiences dry thunderstorms, the aftermath of which causes sandstorms, and which can cause fires if lightning from these storms were ever to strike anything dry and flammable.
