Kig Ho'raing, Lord of Bugh
Kig Ho'raing, Lord of Bugh, was once a simple soldier, albeit a noble one. His roots lie in the kingdom of Cerlin, but destiny and ambition thrust him into the savage land to its east, over which he now rules. Born of Cerlinnu lineage, Kig was the younger son, the shadow to his elder brother, Cutheeli Sdu'mran. Cutheeli, a man of indulgence and pleasure, inherited the throne, leaving Kig with a gnawing hunger for recognition, authority, and a kingdom of his own.
The land of Bugh was an untamed wilderness populated by the Grir, a hardy native tribe with no interest in expansion or ruling anything beyond their immediate territories. Kig, eager to prove himself, made it his mission to "civilize" this land. With an iron fist and ruthless ambition, he brought its disparate territories under his banner, displacing the Grir and imposing his own rule. He established infrastructure where there was none and became the first ruler to so unify the country. His brutal methods brought progress and expansion, and under his influence, Bugh transformed from an unruly wilderness into a growing nation.
Now, with his brother the King in the twilight of his life, and his own kingdom secure, Kig's eyes turn toward his homeland of Cerlin where his nephew, Eiks Sdu'mran, rules. He sees Eiks as a mere boy playing at king, not capable of handling the complexities of a real kingdom. As Kig sees it, Cerlin deserves a true, experienced ruler, one who has tamed a wild land and built a nation from nothing: i.e. himself.
The peace that exists between Bugh and Cerlin is tenuous at best, with Kig's ambitions stirring beneath the calm surface. As King Sdu'mran's health continues to decline, tensions mount. There are whispers of a coming war, of a power shift, of the ascension of a new High King.
But in the shadows, the Grir have not forgotten their displacement. There are rumors of their growing discontent and of a rising leader among them. Their cries for justice could yet prove a thorn in Kig's side. If a war were to break out with Cerlin, they might see an opportunity to reclaim their lands. Thus, Kig walks on a blade's edge, his ambition driving him forward, but his past threatening to rise up behind him.
