Going For Broke

adapted from "White book" page 90

Concept

Not every superheroic die roll happens in the context of a combat phase.
If a Character wants to be especially careful or precise with a Dice Action outside of combat, they can choose to increase their own difficulty in order to make their potential success significantly more ideal.

Manifestation

When a Player decides to GFB, they declare (in even increments only) the number of Column Shifts by which they will make their own attempt more difficult: focus on a narrower region, or fine-tune the results of a creation, or target precisely the right support on a structure. The number of Column Shifts available are: 2, 4, 6, or 8. If the Player then rolls the new Success Number on The Action Chart, they get to lower the Resistance value of the Action more Column Shifts in the Character's favor on The Result Chart as summarized on the following table:

Hero points may always be spent in conjunction with an attempt to GFB. In fact, it is probably a great idea to do so, looking at the increased total that this single roll will need to match.
Again: "Going For Broke" is not used in Combat, where instead Critical Blows and Devastating Attacks would apply. No equivalents of the latter two rows exist in combat as far as the Players have discovered to date.

For example:

Dr. Adel Urda-Na, like other kryptonians throughout the multiverse, sometimes wants to control her own vital signs to pass for "healthy yet unremarkable human" to medical or electronic scans. If she worries that the Character directing the scan might be especially skilled and/or suspicious of her usual cover identity, Adel channels all 05 APs of her own Energy Matrix into Kryptonian Mimicry and then tells the Gamemaster she is Going For Broke to be especially convincing: she has a particular blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature in mind to match a human of her build who is slightly nervous and a touch overheated from her interstate train ride.

Do I say "Gosh, golly" yet? My cover identity is not from Kansas.

I do want to get this just right, though.

And I think they might have Advanced Idea Mechanics backing some of their technology.

Tell you what: I am willing to raise my difficulty by 2 columns, if that means I can narrow down exactly what evidence they are going to pick up.

Sure, no problem.

Oh, wait!

Yes?

I want to make the responsible choice here.

Based in solid science.

What was the original OV for this Kryptonian Mimicry roll?

You do not know that ahead of time.

Right. Exactly. Which is why I am asking.

I hate to have to point this out, but since you are not the one who built the machines in question, and you are not the one who designed the Gadget, and most importantly you are not the one who will be operating the machinery, you can make an educated guess based on prior data but you cannot know what difficulty you face.

Ah.

Drat.

After further consultation with my colleagues, taking into account the grief my dice sometimes give me and the competency of the equipment we have been shown so far, I will in fact Go For Broke to the tune of 4 Column Shifts more difficult. I want those six shifts in my favor on the Result Chart.

And then spend Hero Points on Boosting Dice Actions!

Just to be really, truly certain.
