Appleside Meadery

Appleside Meadery in Gulderry is a cider and mead production house that also serves as an upscale gathering place for locals.   The unique spiced cider of the Appleside Meadery, known as Gulderry Reserve, is produced in collaboration with the Transmuter's Estate from the giant apples produced there, enriching both the Meadery and the Estate in equal measure. As a result of this relationship, the Meadery is considered by the Generation I animants to be a safe place to visit despite its location beyond the boundaries of the Estate.

Architecture

The surface-level structure of the Meadery is one-half warehouse, one-quarter storefront, and one-quarter taphouse. Barrels of the Meadery's products are sent to the docks from the warehouse, sold in bulk as sailors' provisions. Bottles are moved through the storefront for local consumption. In the taphouse, mead, cider, and mixed drinks are sold alongside baked goods and charcuterie boards featuring apples and honey.   The multi-story basement of the Appleside Meadery, formerly a portion of the local copper mines which became isolated from the rest due to cave-ins, houses tiers of apple cider and mead casks at various stages of the fermentation process. Clockwork machinery designed through collaboration with the nearby Winder's Guild chapter adorns the central support column of the basement, allowing workers to more easily load, unload, and decant from the barrels.

Tourism

Appleside Meadery is rarely visited by out-of-towners not hailing from the Winder's Guild or the adjacent Gulderry College. This is partially a result of the Meadery's location far from the Gulderry Docks where most of the tourist traffic is. Far more people are familiar with the Meadery's name through trade with sailors who hail from Gulderry who carry the barrels of mead and cider abroad with them.   The College's students, young and well-heeled as they tend to be, can sometimes pose a crowd control problem for the Meadery. Large groups of the students gather in and around the Meadery whenever exams are done, getting drunk as the night goes on. More than once, the Portreeve's men and their conjured automata have had to come to the Meadery to disperse parties that have become more rowdy than the proprietors could handle. In recent years, efforts have been made on the part of the Meadery to restrict the number of drinks to be dispensed to collegians, though, as bottles and barrels can be found elsewhere, this has merely shifted the problem from the Meadery's halls to the College's dormitories.

Especially in the fall, when demands for the Meadery's famous cider and pies spikes, the whole block around the Meadery smells pleasantly of tart sweetness and cinnamon spice. On cold mornings, this invisible, delicious cloud sinks into the surrounding environs, as the Meadery sits nearly at the apex of the hill at the center of town.
