Queen Taladriel vas Holeven

(a.k.a. The Queen of Brass)

The historical accounts of the reign of Queen Taladriel vas Holeven are some of the greatest sources of material on the early age of Fire that exist. Before her ascension, there was no civilization established in Talonn large enough to be considered a country. According to stone tablets preserved from between 100-400 Fire, Queen Taladriel was crowned in 32 Fire and ruled until her death in 481 Fire. Although in the Dawning age such a long lifespan is nearly unheard of, her status as a proto-elf puts her elongated lifespan into perspective, as proto-elves regularly lived between four to five hundred years before the sundering of the planes. Some historians question her supposed longevity, given within her lifetime the planes had shifted apart at the end of the age of Glory, but according to accounts she was also an extremely powerful spellcaster devoted to the goddess Ioun and it is not outside the realm of possibility that she lengthened her life through magical means.   Taladriel's lineage as a vas Holeven is well-documented, but only after her coronation. It is known that she had several siblings, and no children of her own. The trajectory of her kingdom makes is crushingly obvious that she was succeeded by lesser heirs, her nephew Japheth vas Holeven unable to stabilize the country after her death. The Holeven dynasty lasted well into the age of Flood, before eventually being destroyed; by what, historians do not know, as good record-keeping ends after Japheth's son Yeseren's death in late Fire. However, historians do know that the Holeven line had celestial blood, making them Aasimar, and so as an early Holeven Taladriel would have likely been half or quarter Celestial.   Taladriel's involvement in The Godbreaker's quest is her greatest claim to fame, however. Before her ascent to power, she supposedly met the Godbreaker and aided them, according to her own people's records. Of course, any canny ruler of the time would have claimed the same, and her additional records about the wizard Iason von Seres and the bard Continentie as members of her court have often led to claims that she was simply posturing, and had a much more minor role. However, her importance to picking up the pieces of Talonn's humanoid civilization after the age of Glory cannot be understated. There have even been a few cults dedicated to her, most recently in the age of Magic.   Many elven nobility claim heritage related to the vas Holeven line, especially in High Elf societies. The legendary bloodline's myth lives on in the petty squabbles of heritance and claims of royal blood. The golden eagle of the vas Holeven heraldry is still a popular high elven symbol, gracing many family coat-of-arms. The queen's own appearance has fallen in and out of style over history as well; Fire-age depictions of her were much heavier than your average elven maid, and a full figure in high elven society is still considered very lucky in more conservative circles. The Crystal-age dress known as the "Taladriel" style was specifically designed to emulate a larger frame.    Unfortunately, Taladriel's records were not personal accounts, and details regarding her private life and personality are lost to time. She never married, although many rumors about her lovers' identities or lack thereof have been endlessly litigated by scholars. Almost every prominent figure in her Fire-age records has been postulated to be her paramour, but absolutely no evidence elevates one over the others. By all accounts, she was a charismatic and shrewd leader who almost ruthlessly pursued civilization over the brutal scars of the age of Glory, and a powerful mage on par with von Seres.   Many scholars remain infatuated with the legacy of Taladriel and work to uncover more about her country and life to this day.
