Soa Mahaz (SO-āh Mah-HĀZ)

Soa, a member of the Mahaz clan, is a hunter of some renown back in her birthplace, the Forest of the Geas. As a child, her family life was tumultuous. Her father plucked her beautiful, special-needs mother out of a Riven poorhouse and brought her back to the woods much to the outrage of his family-- and his unstable first wife, who had borne him a son eight years ago. Soa was neglected by her father entirely, and her mother was unequipped to care for a child, so her half-brother Heine Mahaz took over her care despite being a child himself. The bond between the two siblings became unbreakable. After their father left the clan for the last time and never returned, they settled into a family unit with their aunt Ysra Mahaz and cousin Ysa Mahaz . Eventually, Winter Mahaz was found by Ysa and their partner Alistair Mahaz and adopted by Heine. Soa is very fond of Winter and likes to teach her how to hunt, about history, and how to survive on her own in the wilderness.
  Along with the rest of her family, she was forced to leave the woods when Queen Mathilde al Vel exiled the Forest Folk from Ester Fal in 2757 Dawning. Oddly, this ended up saving them from the effects of the undead plague a year later. The Mahaz family-- known as oddballs even among the wood elves-- decided to leave the mainland and travel to the Northern Continent. Soa gladly went along.
  Soa, historically, does not do well with people due to her inability to lie or detect subtle social signals. Her ability to absorb large, detailed amounts of information is greatly valued by her family, as is her frank nature. However, outside of them, she finds most people confusing and unpleasant. Her favorite topic is historical military strategy, and she is a walking library's worth of information about it.
  In 2758 Dawning, the family set out via ship to the Northern Continent, only to be shipwrecked on the Archipelago of Kos. They managed to set up a camp on Duras and hunt for food on Yevas, surviving for about a month before the party's arrival. Upon meeting the party, Soa confided in Katarine de Masque that she was having strange, repetitive dreams of some kind of apocalyptic event. She also offered to travel with them as they attempted to undo the curse on the islands and find a way out, and was accepted as a temporary companion.
  After traveling to Ianthe, Soa felt drawn to the Temple of Shar's ruins, where the party discovered a ritual henge with instructions only Soa could see. Her ability to see them was not magical, but in fact a temporal effect during which she was able to see the henge as it was in the age of Silver. The party completed an ancient ritual to pull Shar's influence towards Kos, during which Soa's right eye went completely black for a few seconds. These events confirmed the party's suspicions that Soa is most likely the Half Moon, Seluné/Shar 's chosen, despite not being religious herself.

History

Although they met in the worst circumstances, Soa considers Katarine a kindred spirit and enjoys her company a lot. This is highly unusual for her, and thus notable.

  • Soa is a psionic rogue, able to materialize psychic blades. She typically throws them, although she is proficient in two-weapon fighting as well. She was taught how to fight by her brother Heine and her cousin Ysa.
  • Soa has an intense fondness for animals, preferring them to people.
