Before the
War on Magic, Fiend Goats were bred by injecting spider genes into mother goats. While the resulting animal looked like a goat, the markings on the fur were reminiscent of patterns on the cavern spiders whose genes were injected into the goats. The eyes of Fiend Goats also looked wrong. While they are dissimilar to the cavern spider, they are also unlike that of mountain goats. When these new goats were milked, they produced a substance that could be aggregated into a silk-like compound.
Uses
Fiend Goats were bred for two primary resources: silk and magic insulators.
An Asmain scientist discovered that compounds left behind in
Borealis Cat paw prints could sense magic much like the Borealis Cat's ability to do so innately. Samples of these compounds, predominately the oils, would glow near a magic source.
The oils were surprisingly potent. As such, it can be diluted 1 : 1,000,000 and still produce the effect. To test the dilutions, Fiend Goats' milk was used. The solution was boiled to test the various states of matter. At the time, magic was stored in temporary containers that would deteriorate at different rates. The magic poured into the solution. Curiosity overwhelmed the scientist and tests were conducted. In one test, all items flash boiled in the liquid dramatically decreased its ability to conduct magic. This created the first man-made magic insulator.
A herd of
Fiend Goats has since been genetically altered to naturally produce milk with the
Borealis Cats' oils present. To avoid confusing matters, this new subspecies is called a Cat-Fiend Goat. During the
Crowning Comet's passing, these goats behave strangely. Bleating at the moon, pouncing on anything that moves, and spinning in circles. The general consensus along Cat-Fiend Goat herders is to leave them be until the effects of the comet pass.
