Every Orie knows a tale about
Crowning Comet and its effects on society. However, the specifics vary over time and region to region. In some cases, the only commonality is the comet itself. The following stories are a few variations.
Pre-Magic Implosion
Before the
Magic Implosion, magic was neither used nor feared. It simply was. And so the story began.
A babe born under the Crowning Comet's glowing tails is kissed with the blessings of a new age. The comet's passing brings strength, wit, and charm in equal measure. The strength of convictions, the wit of a blue tongue, and the charm of a night's sky.
By the time such a child reaches adulthood, the Crowning Comet shall pass again to remind them of the many blessings life brings. To marry such a person is to be forever loved and held in the promises of a beautiful tomorrow.
Post-Magic Implosion
When the Crowning Comet's passing coincided with the
Magic Implosion, the narrative quickly changed.
A babe born under the Crowning Comet is cursed to bring misfortune and despair. Beware lies spoken by the blue of the Comet's tongue. A person, such as this one, has the strength of a vicious borealis cat waiting to pounce, the wit of a sinister mage waiting for your guard to drop, and the charm that only magic can provide. To marry such a person is to be forever tormented and held in suffering until your final days.
This dramatic shift in narrative matched the new societal view on the magic within Orie Country. This version of the story became the national narrative when
Craei Grecofoxas started his campaign against magic.
Eastern Orie Country's inner narrative was similar to that of the West's in the early days of the
War on Magic. However, once
Cordella Grove was released from prison and the anti-magic forces left Scayrus, the local mages and their families were able to rebuild. The narrative surrounding the Crowning Comet reverted to the earlier version with a few adjustments.
A babe born under the Crowning Comet's glowing tails is kissed by Malmi, the Weaver of Worlds and Goddess of the Hopeless. The comet's passing brings strength, wit, and charm in equal measure. The strength to advocate for oneself, the wit of the Heart of Asma, and the charm of the Goddess.
The Crowning Comet shall pass again to remind us of Malmi's promise to protect our land.
