Soulmeliti Forests
Both the name of the nation-state of the Soulmeliti and of the actual forest itself, this dense woodland sits in central Tarien, dividing the Denton and Darien Plains in the Great Belt. Despite the wartorn and sometimes controversial history of its people, those that visit these forests speak of a land of breathtaking beauty. Ancient hardwoods anchor the rolling hills of the forest. Beneath their broad branches, ferns and evergreens compete for sunlight, with patches of firs and cedars growing thickly where the giants are spaced the furthest.
Wildflowers and mushrooms dazzle the pathways with color. One visitor noted that the seasonal booms seem to roll through the forest in an almost curated manner so that one never stays to far without seeing its splendor. The earthy, floral scents are supplemented by a background chorus of songbirds where different species seem to harmonize with each other rather than compete for space. Reynard wrote, upon his visit centuries ago, that "they very sound of woodpeckers at work was rhythmic, almost as if it were timed to provide the underlying beat for the symphony of birdsong".
For those with pure intents it is said the forest is full of deer paths. Indeed, some have claimed that there always seems to be a path to their destination. Others with crueler designs have noted that the forest itself seems to block their travels, with brambles and briars at every turn. If asked about these mysteries most Soulmeliti would merely shrug, giving no thought to what to the seems a simple fact of nature.
