Ainok

Tarkir is home to two lineages of the canine humanoids called ainok.   Those of the desert wastes resemble jackals and are masters of survival and camouflage; many of them belong to the Dromoka clan. As the original inhabitants of the desert and experienced in sand-based magic, having taught the ancient Abzan how to survive in the desert; they prefer to live on the fringes of human-dominated society.   The ainok that dwell in the Qal Sisma Mountains look not unlike large mastiff hounds. Like their desert kin these are the original inhabitants of their environment. Especially trusted ainok join a family of the clan. They are considered to be family members and enjoy all the rights (and assume all the responsibility) that role entails.

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

The ainok of the Shifting Wastes are deeply connected to the desert. Able to find their way to water, and they rarely become disoriented in the ever-changing landscape of the dunes. In fact, some ainok have mastery over the sand itself. These sand shamans excel at obscuring their movements, scouring their enemies with sandstorms, or simply getting their enemies hopelessly lost.   Within the Qal Sisma Mountains the ainok have a tradition of ritual fighting, both as battle training and as a way to winnow out those who were too weak to contribute effectively to the pack. Those who fail this test are to be cast out alone into the wilderness.
