Stankfoot Baumgarten (bōm-GARR-tĭn)
Doctor Stankfoot Baumgarten, Esquire
Born to the sea gypsy Singer tribe who called themselves the Gannet, Stankfoot Baumgarten was raised to trod the swaying decks of a gypsy caravan fleet.
Born before the mast, under the fullest of moons, was he. A stranger to land. But, never to sea! His eyes, as the years have passed, have seen all manner of wonder. He's traveled the world, and sampled the food, from every pot, pan and streetside vendor. He knows every knot, he knows every sheet, he's a master at which lines to belay. He knows when to climb the rig high, and when to let the lines go. He knows the stars in the sky, at every lattitude. He knows the hurricane's eye, and when to turn the boat home. Stankfoot the Sailor has overindulged with royalty; passed out cold on her Majesty's breast. He has lain with courtiers and prostitutes, and made a hundred husbands jealous. Yet the greatest story he ever told began and ended with his Captain, al-Adin. He stayed by his side through the thick and the thin, always there waiting with their boat fit and trim and ready to set sail on the next tide. When his captain was off adventuring, Stankfoot took the wheel, keeping the fair ship prosperous yet always, always, very near. For as we all know the tales and stories of Captain al-Adin, fewer know the stories of the crew and their boatswain, Stankfoot Baumgarten.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Stankfoot is in fantastic physical condition. He has fought through many a storm.
Identifying Characteristics
Stankfoot has an anchor tattooed on his left inner forearm.
Special abilities
He can tie a bowline one handed, and tie a cherry stem into a knot (an overhand, to be precise) with his tongue.
Specialized Equipment
He has gotten a few pricelss tools over the years; a whalebone fid, an obsidian knife, a harpoon atlatl made from rosewood harvested on Teotachetlan Isle.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Stankfoot does not regret any of his career decisions. Personal decisions are another story, entirely.
Sexuality
Stankfoot has a legendary libido, and his explots are legendary, even though that part of his life is not something he brags, or even talks, about. His mates, however, have been "keeping the score that he does not" for years, and it is an impressive document. It has been verified accurate by The Oracle of Shelle, who is not immune to the gossip surrounding Stankfoot's very private, yet somehow very popular, love life.
Education
Stankfoot was trained and educated aboard a school boat of the Singers tribes; meaning he got a world-class education. He then took himself into exile ashore, and attended the Marine Studies classes at The Bardic College Campus. He returned to work with the same captain he had been assigned to years before; al-Adin the sailor.
Employment
Stankfoot currently runs the crew, as Bo's'n on The S/V Kit & Killian in The Warmwind Sea.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Some would call his romantic exploits accomplishments, but he, himself, does not look upon his time with his lovers as some sort of contest. Literally everyone is afraid to ask him about it, because his brows furrow and he begins to scream in esoteric languages that the Singers tribes inadvertantly taught him. To quote the crew, he "gets scarier than a hungover bull-shark".
Failures & Embarrassments
One of the well known stories about al-Adin the sailor is that he had once, during an exceptional lightning storm, chopped down his mast with an axe, so afraid was he of the interminable power of nature. The folklorists always turn it into a story of smart survival; but the truth? Stankfoot is the one who chopped it down! al-Adin has never revealed their secret.
Mental Trauma
There has been much emotional trauma throughout Stankfoot's long, long career. From drowning to mass murders during the horrors of the Elven Purge, Stankfoot's overly long life has been one of constant sorrow.
Intellectual Characteristics
Despite the sorrows and sadnesses that assault him during his unnaturally long, even for an elf, life, Stankfoot keeps things light and droll. He is the first to tell a dirty joke, and the loudest to laugh at the jokes of others. He is unusually intelligent, possessing advanced degrees in hydrophysics and culinary arts. He also plays the guitar, and is a surprisingly good pole-dancer, which he is never shy about. He spent a decade as an exotic dancer, but he was more interested in romance than he was in random or anonymous sexual encounters, so he instead set up a trust fund for training pole dancers in Greynor, and went back to sea.
Morality & Philosophy
Stankfoot is an honorable and straight up man of action.
