The Ethereal Plane

The Ethereal Plane is the realm of living spirits. It is intrinsically tied to the material plane as souls move in conjunction with the physical bodies that house them. It is not known where souls come from, but after the death of a physical body, it is believed that the spirit is taken to Limbus where it awaits judgement before joining the afterlife. Though spirits are bound to their physical bodies while alive, it is possible through magic to bring one's body into the spirit realm, allowing one to move through space without being affected by the material. Additionally, some more restless spirits of the dead may also not find their way to Limbus and thus remain trapped in the Ethereal realm, often tied to their place of death as a ghost or ghoul.
