Brast, the Soulweaver

"Not even death is the end of my research."

Summary

In life, Brast was a man obsessed with the immortality displayed by gods and Ancients. He dedicated all of his time to researching how the Ancients came into existence.   Having been born long after The Shattering of Andromeda, Brast lacked much of the knowledge of the Andron people, but after delving deep into a vault created by Heyvus, the Hoarder and managing to survive, he discovered ancient secrets of magic and references to a magical technology known as the Godstones.   Brast wrote the Ikk'yash (translated to Soul Guide, or the Guide for Souls), and was given the title Soulweaver by those that witnessed his prowess.

Personality

Brast was a man of limited ethical restraints and was willing to put his theories to practice upon whatever medium was most convenient for him to obtain.   His preferred vessel for experimentation was humans, however, as they were often obtained for him by soldiers performing raids on enemy settlements.

Invention of Soul Magic and the Soul Wars

Brast, under the secretive influence of the Ancient Vlakis, discovered the technique that would later become known as Soul Magic. This technique would later be used in the creation of the Soulbinding by Vlakis.   Brast practiced Soul Magic in secret, given that its very nature—using mortal souls as fuel for incredibly powerful, natural law-defying magic—would be considered taboo and unforgivable by the ethical members of the population. But after inventing numerous powerful artifacts with this magic, Brast's research and theories were discovered by his town. And contrary to his fears of punishment, the population of his town wished to instead use his inventions in their wars. The leaders provided Brast with captured enemies for him to experiment on, which vastly advanced his research.   Given the destructive capability of Soul Magic, raids were carried out by the losing side, and Brast was captured. He was promised immunity if he were to disclose the secrets of his people. Upon sharing his knowledge and demonstrating its creation and power, however, his captives were mostly horrified. An ethical dilemma sprung up around the use of mortal souls in magic, and while the technology was reluctantly adopted by all sides, many peoples rebelled against its usage.

Death and Undeath

However, Brast was not as safe as he hoped. Assassination attempts against him were carried out by the defectors of the city he resided in, and one was eventually successful. However, after discovering his patron Vlakis' identity as an Ancient, Brast had developed a plan for his inevitable death with the Ancient's aid.   Brast became a bound spirit, his soul tied to a soulweave, an item which enabled him to move as a specter within a range tethered to the weave. But Brast was unlucky. His ritual was purely theoretical, and he had not accounted for Teralt's rejection of such an unnatural presence. Andromeda's immune system attacked the foreign body. But, unable to be destroyed, the soulweave and bound spirit were instead quarantined, and Brast became trapped inside of his soulweave until centuries later, when he was once again aided by the Ancient Vlakis and released.
Brast roamed Teralt as the incarnation of death for centuries, hidden within the whispers of myths and legends told by the Mortal Species across Teralt. His name is forgotten, but his presence has had a lasting impact on the people.   He inspired The Myth of the Last and is worshipped by the Last Cults as the incarnation of death and the sole judge of life's terminus.

Rebirth

Long after Mordred's death, Brast discovered his Glass Sarcophagus was a perfect vessel for communicating with those nearby and began to abuse this ability to manipulate the faithful Azher'Tek into believing Mordred himself spoke with them from beyond the grave.   Efforts were made to resurrect the false messiah, and Brast would eventually succeed in possessing Mordred's perfectly preserved corpse, becoming the new leader of those Tek that had remained faithful.
