The Children of Castor

"You who know so little of magic are no safer than children."

Founded in the Age of Magic (-12 AOM), the Children of Castor was an organization originally created to defend humanity from the Ancient threat. The Children were the original followers of the human mage Castor Valensra. They were the survivors of the lands and towns surrounding the area which would later evolve into Valens, the City of Knowledge.     After Castor's "ascension" in 0 AOM, to avoid using the name of the new Father of Magic, the Children renamed themselves The Kastir. This is because the word "Kastir" in Morilanic means "Wielder," and as Castor once stated, they are the wielders of magic.
"If you are to become true wielders of magic, you must first understand the great danger of unsheathing such a weapon."   — Castor Valensra
The Children were initially founded after Castor's defeat of the Ancient Hafir, Kin-Killer. Hafir's attacks on the small town of Salvage drew Castor and Kaysta's attention, and after their investigation and subsequent uncovering of the cause, the Ancient was slain by Castor in combat. These events inspired certain members of the community, Erlich Gottlis and Pasma Tash to apprentice themselves under the mage.     As the four traveled to distant settlements experiencing supernatural or divine phenomena, they battled more Ancients and accepted more students, with Pasma eventually interpreting Castor's comment about their ignorance being like that of children literally, dubbing the group the Children.     It wasn't until Castor and Kaysta discovered the Arch of the Son and its Ancient-repelling effects that the group settled in one place. Hearing of the group of mages who had taken up residence in an old ruin, many of the humans they saved along the way flocked to them, a town soon cropping up outside. Masons worked on the ruin, reconstructing a vast fortress that would later come to be known as The Citadel, the school of the Children.   There are many servants who live within the Citadel but are not members of the Children, such as Kaysta's friends Sailia Salum and Mirah Remai, and the maker of meals, Davil Cook.

A Child is confident, yet humble, devoted, yet reserved, creative, yet patient, and loyal, yet aware.

Castor Valensra

The Founder
Also known as the Founder (or more sarcastically the Father of the Children, by Kaysta), Castor Valensra is a powerful mage with an incredible focus on his goals.   He possesses immense knowledge he has gained from obsessive study of relics, ruins, and archaic texts.   Though he is greatly skilled and interested in all things magic and its history, Castor tends to forget or ignore everything else. This leads to a disheveled, sleepless appearance, and an unintentional disregard for the thoughts and feelings of others.

Kaysta Valensra

Herbalism
Castor's cousin, Kaysta is the sole female member of the group, though is never referred to as one of Castor's Children.   Kaysta is a medicinal expert with a keen instinct for and understanding of countless herbs. She teaches this at the Citadel.   She has an incredible sense of empathy and spends most of her time helping others or researching ways to fix problems she encounters.   Kaysta is so empathetic that she has experienced great trauma through the deaths of people she barely knew. Her inability to always save her patients is a great source of regret for her.

Pasma Tash

Magical Theory
Pasma is two years younger than the Valensras. When Castor first came to Salvage, Pasma's home town, the boy worshiped the ground the mage walked on.   Pasma was the first to apprentice under Castor, and later became Castor's closest friend.   Originally an innocent and kind boy, Pasma gradually shifted to become a manipulative and cold individual who leveraged his connection to Castor to perform selfish acts. These behaviors went unnoticed by Castor, and were often done in his name.   Pasma teaches magical theory at the Citadel.

Erlich Gottlis

Capability and Control
Erlich is 7 years older than the Valensras, and is the inspiration for Castor's understanding of magical control.   When Castor saw Erlich perform a spell with one word that Castor always used two words for, it opened a whole new world of understanding.   Despite being much older than Castor, Erlich was the second to apprentice under him.   Erlich appraises the Capability of new Children and instructs in the control of one's intent.

Canta Malensi

Elder Magic Theory
Canta is six years older than the Valensras. He is a passionate theorist and experimenter. His experiments often end explosively, however, as Canta pushes the boundaries of Castor's Laws of Magic.   He believes that modern magic derives—alongside yet-undiscovered sibling forms of magic— from an elder origin magical source. This comes from the existence of the Ancients, who seem to defy the known laws of magic all other life abides by.   He teaches Elder Magic Theory at the Citadel and has gotten into heated arguments with Castor over its validity, often ending with the Founder fully dismissing and insulting Canta.

Davon of Candor

The Assistant
Davon is a skilled mage, but has no particular passion for any one subject.   He likes to learn as much as he can, but his knowledge is mostly an ocean wide and an inch deep.   For this reason, Davon assists other Children at the citadel and fills in when needed.

Ged Semren

Pasma's Right Hand
Ged is a dedicated believer in his gospel of Castor and spreads it fervently. However, he is easily manipulated, as he interprets Pasma's word as the direct word of Castor himself.   He is very protective of Castor, and often prevents others from visiting the Founder so as to leave him undisturbed. For this reason, Ged became the Child that many others would go to when they needed something from Castor.   Ged fills in when another Child is unable to teach their class, but spends most of his free time ordering the servants in ways he feels best aid Castor, such as food deliveries.

Kal Balan

Ancient Studies
Kal is deeply fascinated with the unique biology and abilities of the Ancients. He has multiple Ancientblood Flowers growing in pots in his lab, and Hafir's bones stand reassembled in the corner of his room.   He studies every aspect of Ancients that he can, interpreting rumor, firsthand recounts, illustrations, and attempting to locate and observe them.   Kal instructs in Ancient Studies at the Citadel. His students are often survivors of Ancient attacks seeking reason for their suffering.

Retin Hallas

Magical Relics
The younger of the Hallas twins, he is one of the primary researchers of magical relics retrieved by the Children's expeditions.   Retin spends more of his time inside than his brother.   He teaches the study of magical relics alongside his brother at the Citadel.

Serin Fallow

The Leech
Serin Fallow is an individual who is quite skilled in his magical studies, and could easily instruct in any subject he wished.   However, instead of contributing to the group that he gained his knowledge from, Fallow uses his status to attract women.   He is often scolded by Kaysta Valensra for being lazy and wasting the Citadel's resources. Fallow holds a dark grudge against the Valensras for this reason.

Silas of Deep Valley

Morality and Civic Duty
Having been saved by the Valensras, Silas recognizes the value of the life he has.   He believes that protecting others is one of the core tenets of being a Child of Castor, and he and his students often travel to distant areas to investigate magical phenomena and rumor, assisting any in need.   He rarely teaches at the Citadel, as he and his students are frequently away on missions.

Simen Schaulder

Divine Theory
Five years younger than the Valensras, Simen is an individual obsessed with the divine.   He believes that godhood is not just a status held by beings different from him, but that it is the next step in human evolution.   Simen teaches divine theory at the Citadel.

Suther Hallas

Magical Relics
The older of the Hallas twins, Suther is the leader of expeditions to retrieve magical relics.   Suther spends more of his time outside and away from the Citadel than his brother.   He teaches the study of magical relics alongside his brother at the Citadel.

Trik Mavrin

Dream Studies
After an encounter with an Ancient that plagued people's dreams, Trik became fascinated by the possibilities of such abilities.   He began studying their meanings, and learned to control his dreams at will. Trik believes this is the first step to becoming able to live within other's dreams.   He sees these abilities as an untapped resource, and teaches the study of dreams at the Citadel.

Verick Mave

Castor's Assistant
Nine years younger than the Valensras, Verick views them as adoptive parents.   He was saved alongside many others of his town by the Valensras, and immediately became an apprentice of the Children.   Unlike Ged, Verick does not view Castor as a perfect individual, and recognizes that he has his own weaknesses that must be compensated for. Verick's actions to address these issues and prevent problems for Castor before they arise also contributes to Castor's image as a perfect man.   He often gets into altercations with Ged as he ignores Ged's self-appointed role as Castor's protector, and bypasses him to see the Founder frequently.

Veris Dovlen

History
Veris Dovlen is one of the original Children, and maintains his higher status purely for this reason.   He is not a skilled mage, but is so taken in by history of any kind that he is a font of knowledge the other Children frequently tap into.   He has deep conversations with Castor about history and the impact the actions of past people's have had on the present.   Veris teaches history at the Citadel and frequently collaborates with other likeminded Children such as the Hallas twins, Kal Balan, and Canta Malensi.

Voran Malensi

Magical Enforcer
A year younger than the Valensras, Voran has always lusted after Kaysta.   Like many others, he joined the Children after his town was saved by the group.   Voran is incredibly skilled in destructive magics.   Voran does not instruct at the Citadel, but aids Canta in his experiments, joins expeditions as a bodyguard, and patrols the Children's territory as an enforcer.

Zeu Grendar

Zoology
Zeu studies all things animal and uses his magic to aid his understanding of biological organisms.   He frequently collaborates with Kal Balan.   He also often holds discussions with Kaysta so that he might better understand the plants that makeup his subjects' diets and ecosystems.   He instructs in zoology at the Citadel, but his classes are small unless his lectures are related to creatures with possible magical origins.
