Session 2, The Duke of Blight
As the adventurers attempt to enter the forest in search of where these mushroom individuals came from. As they do a man comes running out in a desperate manner. If asked he will say he was with a group of adventurers called "The Grey Wolves", and they were sent to try to find out what the corruption of the forest was about. Whenever they got about 4 hours into the forest they were met with a wall of branches, as the front of the group headed to it, the branches opened up. He didn't want to go in, and hesitated for but a moment, before he knew the branches closed with his companions on the other side. That's when he expected to hear screaming, but he didn't hear anything, but it was almost worse that way. His name is Thagbran Carpathia, and his stat block is as follows.
Thagbran Carpathia
If he finds out that the group is planning on heading in that direction, he will join them to gain back his honor, he wants to be able to avenge his friends. He will then join them, and the party will enter the forest.
The forest as soon as they enter into seems to be immediately against them. The roots of trees makes the entire forest difficult to traverse, as they are seemingly always at tripping level. As the group travels through the forest, the trees seem to have thorns all up and down them vines dangle and tangle into each other. If death couldn't be seen in the decrepit trees, the ground is covered in death filled plants. Withering flowers, wilting grass, and dead shrubbery are everywhere. Even though the sun is up, the canopy of these trees twist and combine to make the interior of the forest cloaked in darkness. As Thagbran leads them through the forest, it doesn't get any better, about 4 hours into the travel they will see a wall of branches and thorns, the thorns encompass what looks like a 45 foot radius circle. These branches cannot be cut, and are not affected by spells. Once approached the thorny branches will part revealing a beautiful lush portion of the forest, the grass is well cut and green, small white pedal flowers are obvious throughout, it is a sight for sore eyes. The branches actually form a semi circle that goes about 90 feet up. The interior of this dome is still dark, but it is much brighter than the outside of it. In the center of this dome is a huge 50 foot tall mushroom, it looks to be about 20 feet in diameter, and at the foot of it is what looks like a kneeling woman. As the heroes enter, they begin to see other things inside this dome, the ground is littered with bodies of adventurers, it is also covered in medium sized mushrooms with spots at the top of them. As they get closer and closer, the kneeling woman will stand up and turn around, revealing the mushroom filled eye, and another new mutation that has recently been added. Her veins are visible, and they pump with black, her eye is also bleeding a black liquid, as she turns around she screams, and battle ensues.
QUAGGOTH SPORE SERVANT
After inevitably defeating the servant the group can explore futher. If they investigate the tree, they must roll an investigation check, a successful investigation check of DC 10 reveals that the gills at the cap of the mushroom glow a constant dim glow a DC 12 reveals little pokes of the mycelium poking out very slightly around the mushroom, DC 15 Reveals that these roots are actually pulsating ever so slightly, DC 20 reveals that deep within the stem of the mushroom is a very dim glow that pulsates at the same rate that the roots do. DC 25 reveals that these connect in a way that shows that the mushroom seems to be sucking the life out of the forest, this isn't the main source of the corruption, but it is definitely a factor that isn't helping. Even as they investigate, the mushroom does not move, and does not speak.
If the adventurers try to leave the dome, the branches will not part, and then they will hear a deep and calming voice in all of their minds. This voice will introduce itself as Cynutho, it will explain that they unfortunately cannot leave, this is because they took away his nourishment to feed upon, and the girl was that nourishment. Battle will shortly ensue.
Cynutho, The Duke of Blight
After the battle, if the plant was sufficiently cut, it will reveal a treasure that was hidden away inside of a hidden compartment in it's stem. this contains.
1800 copper, 1000 silver, 60 copper, opaque white, blue, and brown gems (Chalcedony, and 3 Jasper), 2 transparent blue-green gems (Zircon), A clear vial with a cloudy blue liquid that is cold to the touch (Potion of Frost Giant Strength), and a brown satchel with a tiny rope holding it together, inside are 4 beans, this bag weighs 1.5 pounds (Bag of Beans)
After the battle, the top of the dome will crack ever so slightly to reveal true sunlight in this lair for the first time in who knows how long. Stepping outside, the adventurers will witness a flower begin to bloom, then wilt away, showing that what they did helped, but the true cause of this corruption is unknown. As they make their way back to the village of Hogan a small celebration will begin in the town square around the well. It's mostly people saying thank you to the heroes, a touching moment will be a middle aged man with black skin approaching them and asking them about his wife Marisha, his name is King, he sent her to grab vegies just before that scream was heard, he didn't want to assume the worse, but she hasn't returned home yet. When told of her fate, he will simply walk away from the group. As the thank yous continue, Sirira herself will come out and thank the adventurers, until a soldier comes to her ear and whispers, she goes from jovial to angry and announce that every citizen arm themselves for an attack on the village. Get some rest, and then be ready for battle for a war against the forest is about to begin.
