Gates of Hell

Overview

This gateway appears as two huge bronze doors. These are Chronic Anachronisms . It is rumored that they were taken from a future artist called Rodin. The other version of the myth is that he had them cast after he had died. Regardless, the doors present icons of the Underworld.

Some have referred to the doors as the Doors of Doom, and claim that the statues upon them can come alive and attack those seeking entrance or exit without permission.

Their current location is said to be in Atlantis itself. They were witnessed in the Royal Palace itself several centuries ago. Similarly they have been encountered in the Temples of various gods, and are said to be a mechanism used by Hades to take the lives of senior clerics and priests.

Some rogues in Atlantis have claimed that the doors have been witnessed around the city on random walls.

Thief Deterrence

Given their nature - false versions have been created by artisans and used in areas of Atlantis. Others have used illusionists to create appearing and disappearing versions to dissuade Thieves from attempting to break into key houses and treasuries in the City.

Entrance to Hades Underworld

This particular entrance to the Underworld is linked directly to an identical pair of doors that stand within the Palace of Hades itself. This portal to the Underworld is said to move its location in the Material World at the will of Hades but is also known to move in a semi-autonomous fashion. They are said to have never been successfully used by any mortal yet.

Architecture

The Doors stand 6 metres high, 4 metres wide and 1 metre in depth to the wall they appear on at any given time (19.7×13.1×3.3 ft). The doors, when closed contain 180 figures. The figures range from 15 centimetres (6 in) in height, to more than one metre (3 ft).

Above the doors is the statement:

Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate

Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.
