Protectorate of Erkin
Protectorate of Erkin is one of the two self-governing states loyal to the Irgia Republic, the other being the Garol. Despite the land trade medium between the midland and the southern, the state was initially formed as to guard and maintain the Wall of Irgian - the defensive wonder - protecting the south from any outsider's invasion.
Most of the population are Krin due to the fact that its territory was once controlled by the Empire of Kritus, and even has the Krin-based capital called Erkisium.
Structure
Erkin is a protectorate with the Governer of Erkin, initially installed by the republic, ruling under a specific arrangement. They lead the council consisting of several councilors from various towns, discussing any decision occurred on internal affairs. The governer also a representaive in the Irgia senate, but not much powerful unlike the Irgia's formal, original senators. The reason why the republic won't control directly because the people was happy to let the local ruled rather than the Irg - and still it is.
As a promise to be protected, each year the Erkin must send tributes, including any products of high-yielded crops like grains, and some exotic trade if the Irgia council desire, to receive new wares and funds.
Culture
The culture are mixed with Krin's organized lifestyle, and Irg's merchantism.
Public Agenda
The main reason, since the pre-Kritus era, is to build and maintain the wall of Irgian; A long stone wall to connect two mountain ranges together, blocking any outsiders from the midland and above into their region which had been named the Gate Lowland.
History
It's a megaproject the republic appointed in 6th centuries BVE, after they heard about the Midlander's warmongering, possibly the Kritus. They decided to construct it on the gap between two mountain ranges that had been being quarried.
By the time the wall finished in 575 BVE, the town of Erkin was found and thriving.
Lost to the Foreign
Their decision was right - but not expected. Within 4 years after the Krin-Irg War declared in 569 BVE, the wall was breached. The town of Erkin was pillaged, and the army kept getting closer. The republic sued for peace by signing the truce to concede all the conquered land to the empire. For almost 400 years, many Krins started immigrating and developing the new Province of Kisium. While Erkin was renamed Kisium, new towns were also settled, assimilating with the locals. During that time, any trade goods passing here was being overcharged to the point the republic gave up and did something else, like colonizing the Ronminar Isles for example.
Return to Sender
The wealth from such business incredibly strengthened the republic, and it was ready to beat the weakened empire. In 168 BVE, the Irgia declared the war, with numerous armies being deployed to take control of the wall and the Kisium. They successfully repelled the enemies out of the wall in 167 BVE, however, suffered too many casualties. Furthermore, the people seemed to dislike the traditional republic laws (although the council was accepted) and thus unrest emerged. Realizing that their own people couldn't do this much, the decree was enacted a few months later that for now on, the Kisium, now renamed to Erkisium, should be ruled by the locals, under a certain arrangement.
The result was pretty good; The people seemed to agree with the new decision if only they're not overcharging things again.
Demography and Population
Most of the population are Krin, closely followed by Irg, and others(Garols, Valonians, etc).
Territories
The state is expanded across the Gate lowland, with well natural barrier and the wall.
Military
The local militray is small and limited by the republic laws to prevent seperatism. Most of the time it's been used only to keep the peace in the country and to garrison the wall. However, the republic allow their own armies to pass and station on any situation.
Foreign Relations
Erkin seem to have a rival relationship with Garol. Even both are Irgia's protectorates, the republic seem to endorse the latter due to a long-established diplomacy. They fight each other oftenly by humilating them during the official competitions.
Trade & Transport
The wall gate is built of the main road. It's the trade medium between the midland and the southern countries, thus it's the caravan's hotspot, with a proper hospitality.
