Loviatar, Goddess of Pain, Lust, Obsession

Overview

Loviatar represents the one of the uncomfortable truths in humanity; the connection between pleasure and pain. For devotees of her; they believe the simultaneous experience of both is divine, and that the experience is the closest mortals will ever get to the gods.

Worship

Loviatar is one of the condemned gods, and formal worship is outlawed across Terrania. While not completely absent from our world, the last vestiges of the her worship exist in the seedy underbellies of cities and at the outer most fringes of society. At one time, the worship of Loviatar was tolerated in my societies in Terrania. Central to the worship were the Den's of Desire, where the faithful could divulge their carnal desires in the pursuit of sexual satisfaction through pain. The exhilaration one feels during the rituals is said to be the greatest and most addicting. Many followers of Loviatar originally worshipped Ilmater. During the Ilmater rituals of suffering, endurance and bearing of burdens; the spark of satisfaction might tickle the mind. That tends to be the gateway for many. The Den's are run by her most faithful; the Tormenttas. Their rituals are truly barbaric, and result in the massive scaring to ones flesh, which the Tormenttas wear with pride. The greater the pain, the greater the ecstasy.

Lore

Loviatar was created when the Goddess Sune cast off her infatuation with Lathander . The detached essence of her spirit manifested into Loviatar, who was filled with all the emotions Sune had suppressed as well as the dark magic of Shar, and therefore concentrated deeply within Loviatar. These filled her with the temptations of lust and urges for physical pain. As a young being, Loviatar wandered the Dreamscape alone, tortured by the horrific state that was her existence. This was until she was discovered by Ilmater. He was seemingly aware of Loviatar's divine origins, and believed the wretched being was worthy of redemption. He fostered the young goddess in the hopes of helping her come to terms with dark energies that swirled within her. Over time with Ilmater's guidance, Loviatar was able to control and level the strong emotions within, so much so the other gods allowed her to enter the Pantheon.   However, as redeemed she had seemed outside, inside the unbearable fire of resentment towards Sune flamed. Sune, as best as she could, could not ultimately hide her shame at the existence of Loviatar. For this reason, when the Shattering began, as a result of the schemes of Cyric, Loviatar choose the Condemned Gods side. And at the end of the ordeal, was cast out of The Pantheon.
