Deepline Seekers

The Deepline Seekers, pay homage to Ivalla, the Peaceful, matron of all Lakes, Youngest of the Daughters of the Lord of Waves.
Many lakes have a guardian spirit, an avatar of the Lord of Waves, that protects the cities and villages around it. This spirit must be appeased and requires sacrifice. This sacrifice requires a variety of different types of sacrifice.

Structure

Much to the chargrin of the Deepline Seekers, not all who live on their lakes are devotees of the Lord of Waves, but typically everyone in a single lakeside town are devoted.
Upon becoming a member of the Seekers, the rank of Waveling is bestowed by eating a cooked Deep One. Lake Wavelings are acolyte protectors of the lake and serve as law enforcement in the community and are dedicated to its betterment.
Upon advancing, the Waveling becomes a Lake Priest. Lake Priests perform small ceremonies and oversee the Wavelings.
When the member becomes a Drowned Man, he is submerged in the Lake until dead, then given the Kiss of Life by another Drowned Man; should the Lord of Waves and Ivalla allow it, the member returns having had their lungs filled with the Lord’s blessing. A Drowned Man or Woman journeys between communities and helps to share information.
After becoming a Drowned Man, the member may become a Harbinger. The Harbinger begins taking an active role in hunting Deep Ones. They venture out into the world to fight the Deep Ones.
There are few Deepdivers, those of this rank are both community leaders and rabid foes of the Deep Ones. It is a difficult balance to maintain and few can master it.

Divine Origins

Shortly after the Nomani settled the Archipelago, they began worshipping a creature they named Lord of the Waves. They believed the spirit of each of his sons inhabited an island in the Archipelago. They believed the Lord had protected them on their journey, and would continue to protect them.
In the Dream Fields, creatures known as the Deep Ones would boil out of the sea and raid Gnoll settlements and Zan forts. These hated creatures tried to destroy any port or fishing vessel in the Rocky Sea. Those in the Sea began praying to someone, anyone, to help and they were answered by a creature claiming to be God of the Oceans.
Across Terusha’s rivers, those using the river as trade routes, began seeing an old man in the rushing waters keeping them moving and away from predators. Various lakes of Terusha, began seeing a strong man standing on the shore near the best fishing pools.
As travelers spread across the land, they began to realize that this same entity had appeared across the world. Various churches and sects were merged into three distinct churches – each one dedicated to one of the Lord of Waves’ three daughters.

Tenets of Faith

The Deepline Seekers value community above all else. The community is what protects us.
Unfortunately, this leads the Deepline Seekers to be xenophobic and overly protective of their lakes. They fear outsiders to their community and vehemently protect it. This leads to increased violence against the Deep Ones.

Ethics

The most common aspect amongst the Deepline Seekers is that the sanctity, purity and cleanliness of the Lake must be maintained at all times. Marriages and other festive events are conducted on the lake. Funerals, however, are conducted on the shore, where the ashes are buried to help the ecology of the area.
The Seekers are the protectors of their community, though they will hire bodyguards or “sentries” to protect the lake.

Granted Divine Powers

The Deepline Seekers take the Water Domain and are bonded to the spirit of the lake.

Sects

Each lake has a slight variation of the faith depending on the community. There are almost no Deepline Seekers in the Final Empire, as they cannot stay quiet about their faith and are often killed quickly.
