The Battle of Mykolaiv

The Battle of Mykolaiv, also known as the Massacre at Mykolaiv, was the opening engagement in the Siege of Odessa. Teutonian forces under the command of General Vintar Essenburg clashed with the forces of Lady Gissel Von Murmansk and Sir Ryker Schnee. This battle would ultimately shape the relationship between the two sides and cause lasting consequences across the whole of Teutonia for years to come.

The Conflict

Prelude

On the 18th April 1120, the Operation in Odessa begins. Battle Group 1 under the command of General Vintar Essenburg and consisting of the 4th Alpine Militia, Tortugan Buccaneers, The 8th Foot of Vienna (also known as the Hellsmashers), and Wartons Warlocks, advance with their objective of setting up defensive line alongside the town of Mykolaiv. Starting at one of the forts or villages that border the State, the units are to sweep across their area of operation to ensure no enemy forces are behind them as they set up their defensive position.   The Tortugan Buccaneers and the 4th Alpine Militia were to start the operation from what was believed to be the ruined town of Mykolaiv. However on the 19th April 1120, as they moved onto the town their forward scouts reported three banners flying from various points of the town. One consisted of a Golden Raven on a Red field, the other two looked very similar to the symbol the Joyful Lost cultist under King Sable had tattooed on their face.   The Hellsmashers took up the rear of the 4th Alpines and the Buccaneers march, however their scouts where the first to note that the town had some form of armed forces within its walls. Believing the chaotic winds blowing in their favour and wanting to collect skulls for the Blood gods throne, they detour from their original objective east of the town and head straight for Mykolaiv.   On the 20th April 1120, believing that the banners flying over Mykolaiv indicate that the town is held by a holdout of joyful lost and with the town being a key strategic position, General Vintar orders an attack.

The Engagement

On 20th April 1120 the combined forces of the 4th Alpine Militia, Tortugan Buccaneers and the Hellsmashers begin their attack on the fortified town. However, the attack quickly goes astray, A force of magic users previously reported by the scouts of Wartons Warlocks and flying a banner with similar design to those in Mykolaiv catch the Hellsmashers attention. Being proud followers of the Blood God, the sight of magic causes many within the 8th Vienna of foot to rage and assault this foe, leaving the assault of the town to the Alpine and Buccaneers.
Unaware of the situation the Buccaneers proceed with their assault on the towns river port. They are met with heavy archer fire but still press their attack. Their leader, the Norscan Krom Ashbastion, leads the assault off their boats but the archer fire delays or outright kills many of the Tortugans trying to follow him. Those that do are scattered and uncoordinated, soon faced with a well-trained heavy force of troops. Fighting with a Zealous fury the defenders manage to push the Buccaneers back onto their ships and away from the town. Despite the healing skills of Sir Angela of the Order of the Eagle, the Buccaneers loose around 100 men and woman.

Meanwhile the 4th Alpine Militia is caught off-guard when the Hellsmashers change direction to assault the force of magic users. The untested Alpine were supposed to be the support for the more experienced Hellsmashers during the assault, however now they found themselves assaulting the town by themselves. Upon seeing the Hellamshers leave the moral of the 4th Alpine dropped, but regardless they still attempted to siege the town. Lines and ladders were hoisted but were cut or pushed back by the defenders as burning oil rained down from ramparts. Eventually the 4th Alpine were forced to withdraw loosing 100 men and woman in the assault, but the alpines healers managed to prevent more lives from being lost.

Driven by their Zealous nature, the hellsmashers charge at the magic users on the eastern flank. Sensing an early victory against an undersized force they are drawn into the jaws of a trap as a force of 700 medium troops emerge from Mykolaiv as the Alpine is pushed back.
Despite being outnumbered and the fighting being fierce as expected, neither side gives ground but the attack had done the damage it intended to do with the Hellsmashers loosing 100 Khornites.

As the day comes to an end both sides make camp waiting for the others move. After suffering 300 loses, having the Hellsmashers engaged in 2 on 1 battle and having the Alpine and Tortugans pushed back from the town, General Vintar makes the order to detour Wartons Warlocks and the 1st Berlin of Foot from their original objectives of protecting the Battle Groups eastern flank, to support in the taking of Mykolaiv.

On 22nd April 1120, the 1st Berlin of Foot and Wartons Warlocks begin to move. It would take 4 more days for the 1st Berlin of Foot to reach the engagement, but the Warlocks would reach the battle the following day. Their scouts report that magic users that baited the Hellsmashers into an ambush had began moving east back to the town. The Teutonians decide to attempt to ambush the seemingly retreating unit with the Tortugans the Warlocks, trapping them in a pincer movements. The Tortugans are ordered to abndon their boats and move to intercept the enemy unit. Meanwhile the Alpine Millita would support the Hellsmashers in their engagement.

  23rd April 1120
On 23rd April 1120, the Hellsmashers awake early with news they were soon to be reinforced by the Alpine Militia and prepare themselves for a decisive and victorious day. Charging from their camp they are met in the middle ground by a much smaller force than last time. The battle field already muddy from the previous days battle and littered with blood and bodies only fuels some of the worst fighting. Weapons are abandoned as teeth and knige become the standard, but the magic being thrown by the enemy is difficult to counter and eventually takes its toll and effect.
The Alpine arrived to see their brothers of Khorne already knee deep in enemy blood. Believing nothing could survive against such a force, the attack they summoned in response was devastating. The light mountain troops copied the Hellamshers and drove a wedge straight at the heart of the smaller unit they faced. Then the point of the arrow met a group of magic users and the attack was halted. It wasn’t long before the Alpine found themselves trapped and encircled. Suffering an additionally 100 loses, however the combined assault between the Alpine and Hellsmasher had defiantly resulted in enemy loses. The Alpine was forced to fall back and regroup as the Hellsamashers guard their retreat.

Meanwhile, the Tortguans moved to incept the seemingly retreating unit, only to find that it had not retreated and instead had moved north to attack Wortan and his warlocks.
The Warlocks, although small in number had often been the difference in battle. Although taken by surprise by the enemy unit, the Warlocks proved their worth, fighting as if a much bigger force. Eventually both sides withdrew to deal with their wounded.

The surprise attack on the Warlocks leaves many wounded delaying the Warlocks from moving any more without abounding them. However fortune favoured the Warlocks as no engagement came the following day and many wounded were able to be taken care off. News came from the Scouts that the Heavy force guarding Mykolavi was preparing to leave the town, no doubt to engage.

  25th April 1120
On the 25th April 1120, 10 miles to the east of the 1st Berlin of Foot and the Tortugans, A large force of demons appear from the east. 20 miles south west of the Spears, 2 more forces appear. Initially thought of as further demonic forces or joyful lost reinforcements a small cheers goes up as it is realised that it is the 3rd Munich Militia and the Conclave of Bane from Battle group 2, apparently in pursuit of the new demonic forces.

Forward runners from the 3rd Munich and Conclave of Bane reported that Battle group 2 hadn’t engaged a single enemy, with these demonic units bursting from the forest south of Myrne and running west to engaged Battle Group 1. They report that General Heinrich sent them to assist Battle Group 1 believing the defending forces had prepared an ambush in defence of the western side of the state that battle group 1 was attempting to break into. However it would be a couple of days before the two forces would be in a position to help the rest of the battle group due to distance.

  26th April 1120
The following day was a sunny pleasant morning but the day was anything but pleasant for Teutonia. The ground vibrates under the charging feet of the Hellsmashers. The fury of Khorne becomes too much and even before they reach the enemy some start flailing and fighting those around themselves. The confusion and brutality on show is devastating to the unit and the joyful lost take full advantage, standing on the edges of the fight they pick off individuals.
By the time the heavy force from Mykolaiv arrives there is not much for them to do. It becomes a clean up operation, but one that is hard earned even despite the hellsmahsers chaotic situation. At the same time the Alpine militia is hit by the Heavy force as well. The Alpine attempted to divert a handful of their troops to halt the advancing hammer that was going to strike the Hellsmashers, it is no surprise when the Elite enemy over runs them.

The 1st Foot of Berlin (also known as the Spears of Khoreg) march past the warlocks in perfect formation, through the Buccaneers fresh for battle and don’t let the enemy stop them. The spears perform a brutal assault on one of the Heavy force. The pride of Berlin ride roughshod over the smaller weaker force. Enemy losses are seen but can’t be confirmed. The Tortugan Buccaneers wreak havoc into a reduced force, with the enemy tyring to find a way to deal with the Spears, the Tortugans nature to infiltrate and fight dirty does them well.
When the fire flies into them from afar the Spears turn, form up and prepare to hold. The demons that have appeared to the east fire magic and arrows from afar. Gaps are found in armour and spells bring strong men to their knees, and just as it seems the demons will overrun they disappear off towards the east again.
