Dancer

No dancer’s story is the same; they can arrive in a bar for a multitude of reasons, alone or in a group. Some dancers simply like to travel, and will move in caravan-like groups, stopping by bars to earn coin in a city-space. They may lose or gain individuals at each stop, but normally the core group will stay together for a long time. Others are sent by their employers at other bars to new ones, for various reasons. Even still there are other dancers or wannabe-dancers who stumble upon a bar-- intentionally or otherwise-- and ask for work there. Depending on their experience, they either begin dancing for a crowd immediately, or are taken under the wing of a more senior dancer, generally flitting around between dancers until they find a proper mentor they feel comfortable with. This training can take anywhere from a few months to several years, depending on what they are learning and any prior experience in the field. In that time, the learning dancers are given places to stay and may occasionally dance with a partner or group, but do not usually take private sessions. Much training does occur inside these bars, as they do act as learning spaces, but there are also some schools dedicated to teaching the fine art of performative dance. There is a distinct difference in style between those who have learned formally and those who have learned informally, and many regular bar-goers find their preference somewhere in between the two.

Perception

Purpose

Dancers are a deeply important facet of devilish society; they are entertainers and storytellers, record-keepers and listeners, and their establishments offer food and shelter to those who need it. Dancers also function as private entertainers, providing private dances, songs, stories, and other services (often sexual) for those with the coin to afford it.

Social Status

Dancers are deeply respected among their peers, as their profession is acknowledged as a difficult and taxing job requiring much education and training. They help devilish society functioning effectively, allowing for devilfolk to express their sexuality without fear of prosecution; dancers are a perfect example of devilish culture and views toward sexuality and gender expression.
