Oblex

Profile

Oblexes are the result of a failed experiment conducted by a group of illithid scientists. They were designed to scout for sapient beings for the illithids to prey upon, but quickly developed wills of their own. Instead of obeying their former masters, oblexes seek memories to feed on, motivated by hunger and not much else.

The most terrifying thing about an oblex, however, is not its desire to eat a creature's memories, but its unique ability to create a simulacrum of any creature it has eaten the memories of. A creature that has had their memories eaten by an oblex will recover after some rest, but the oblex will still exist, able and willing to use the creature's face to lure others into a trap. The simulacrum that an oblex creates using a creature's form can move independently from the main oblex body, although they remain connected by a thin, slimy thread.

As an oblex eats more and more memories, it will continue to grow, until it reaches a critical mass. When an oblex has too many conflicting memories and personalities, it will split into two or more smaller oblexes, each with some subset of the memories the previous oblex had.

Plot Events

"Reigniting the Hearth at Kindlhollow"

Within the kruthik tunnels near Kindlhollow, two kruthiks were found dead, killed presumably by some kind of psychic force. The party also happened upon two kruthiks that appeared to be made out of some kind of bright green ooze, which were sealed away behind a mound of rocks within the tunnels. The strange kruthiks seemed docile and nearly-motionless when examined by the party, but fled the moment that the party looked away. Venandi's reaction to hearing that these "kruthiks" were present seemed to indicate to the party that they were dangerous, but they had already vanished into the Feywilds without a trace by the time the party was alerted to the possible danger.
