Vegepygmies

Profile

Vegepygmies, sometimes referred to as "mold folk", are fungus creatures that thrive in shady forests and underground caverns. They have a curious relationship with Russet Mold, and supposedly come into being after a creature is killed by the mold and melds with its spores. Vegepygmies are generally wary of any creatures intruding on their home turf, and will instantly attack the moment that they believe their Russet Mold is in danger.

Russet Mold

Russet Mold is a dark red fungal growth that is known for being very hardy and appears to have origins tied to the asteroid that impacted Russet Crater several hundred years ago. The exact origin of this mold is unknown, but some researchers have speculated that it might be related to the practice of necromancy. The fungus itself is highly toxic, especially to other fungus-like creatures.

Vegepygmies have been found in many places other than Russet Crater, which implies that external forces have assisted in the fungal growth's migration. Once Russet Mold takes hold in an area, it is supposedly impossible to remove completely, and can only be kept in check with the use of magic.

Plot Events

"Detoxing Russet Crater"

Upon their arrival at Russet Crater, the party was made aware of a group of vegepygmies and a dark mold growth at the base of the Pearly Kapok. The vegepygmies seemed wary of the party at first, but not outright hostile, until they reanimated the Russet Guardian and it started to clear away the Russet Mold from the base of the tree. The vegepygmies attacked the party and were handily defeated. After clearing the mold entirely, the party found the skeletal remains of three individuals, which were likely the bodies that had been corrupted by the mold to form the small band of vegepygmies that had attacked them.
