The Torne-Duile Plant
The Torne-Duile were an early discovery of rangers and druids exploring the unending forest. They discovered that along the edge of the forest splotches of a deep purple moss grew especially thick along side of the world. After many trips to the woods to study this plant, legendary ranger Nerifiel Elderbrook (she/her) discovered that what was thought to be moss was in fact the roots of massive treelike plants. The mauve moss-roots consumed sunlight, rain, and small creatures, feeding a canopy growing upside down underneath the floating peninsula. Realizing the magnitude of this discovery, Elderbrook dedicated her life to propagating this tree eventually coaxing it to grow first in Eleznór and ultimately throughout the city of Marsétan.
"Upon entering the gardens of Santolina Castle I spotted the massive glass box that takes up the entire east wall of the greenhouse. The top half of the box filled with soil cut through by several metal rods connecting the two glass panes. In the dirt I could see where the twine netting that once supported the earth has decomposed. In its place the striking mauve roots that burst onto the surface in moss-like fractal patterns. Here, the Torne-Duile shares the top of the terrarium with small rodents, insects, and other plants. But following the roots down they converge, intertwine, growing more robust until it bursts out of the bottom in thick trunks. Deep purple foliage strikes out looking almost like some unearthly upside down willow tree. And at the base of the box, a lightest dusting of fallen earth, a testament to the Torne-Duile's capabilities" - Nerifiel ElderbrookIn the years following the discovery, the Torne-Duile has become an essential component of protecting Marsétan. It has grown swiftly under the care of the gardeners of first Eleznór and later the municipality as a whole. In turn, an entire ecology has spread underneath the ground. Few would willingly venture below, but those who do brave the janky hanging maintenance and observation paths underneath the city, speak of insects, plants, and animals unseen on the surface growing within the Torne-Duile's canopy. Later writing of Nerifiel Elderbrook mused that the Torne-Duile may in fact be multiple species, with variations growing all around the continent. Such ideas have yet to be followed-up on. The Torne-Duile have come to represent safety for conscious-kind. A method of prevent another Split or collapse such as the one suffered by Fools Lip.
