Demons

“Better to reign in Hell, than to serve in Heaven.” ― John Milton, Paradise Lost

Demons are a very interesting species as most people think of them as sin itself. They believe that without demons sin and evil wouldn't exost in the world, however this simply isn't true. Demons exist because sin exists; they are interconncted. You can not have one without the other. Demons represent the ultmate sinner not the sin itself. They are what happens when you are evil, vile, and cruel. They are not these things given flesh.

Demon Hierarchy

Demon’s are split into six different levels based on sheer power and influence.

Royalty

The royalty of hell are the highest level of demon and the most powerful. They are equals with some of the powerful beings in the universe such as Archangel, Demigods, and Grim Reapers. They are considered Divine Warriors on the basis of power and prestige alone. There is very little in this world that can hurt them let alone kill them, as most of the usual tricks do little to nothing to them. The only beings who pose a significant threat to the royalty of hell are Archangel, Demigods, and high ranking Grim Reapers.

Weaknesses

  • Deorum Ambulent causes minimal harm and some discomfort.
  • Holy water may irritate them but doesn't pose a significant threat.
  • Salt has limited effectiveness on them
  • Iron can cause minor physical harm but won't immobilize them.
  • Holy items generate discomfort but have little impact on these powerful demons.

Noblility

The Nobility is the secondest highest level of demon and therefore the second most powerful. At the moment there are currently 20 lords and ladies of Hell. Each of them rule over a portion of a sector of hell and while there are usually two nobles to a sector there can be up to four. These nobles have those the Princess and Princes of Hell trust the most.

  • The Nobility's loyalty to their Princes or Princesses can be a weakness. If the loyalty is ever in doubt or broken, they may become susceptible to manipulation.

Wraiths

Wraiths also known as High level demons are the third highest level of demon, making them somewhat powerful and while they are nowhere as powerful as royal and noble demons they are still forces to be reckoned with. They are the warriors of Hell and most Vampires, Succubus, and Incubus can be classified as Wraiths.

Weaknesses

  • Deorum Ambulent (metal found in holy places) causes extreme discomfort but limited harm.
  • Holy water can burn them slightly and briefly weaken their powers.
  • Salt has a minor effect on them.
  • Iron can cause physical harm but won't incapacitate them easily.
  • Holy items generate fear and discomfort but have minimal impact.

Hell Beasts

Hell Beasts also known as Mid Level demons are those whose physical forms take the shape of animals, often dogs, cats, and horses. These demons are seen as little more than pets by higher level demons.

Weaknesses

  • Deorum Ambulent (metal found in holy places) can potentially cause significant harm.
  • Holy water causes burning and pain upon contact.
  • Salt can disrupt their energy flow and weaken their abilities.
  • Iron is more effective and can temporarily immobilize them.
  • Holy items generate fear and discomfort.
  • Despite their limited physical forms, these demons maintain some animal instincts. They could be vulnerable to luring traps or magical baits designed to exploit their animal nature.
  • Magic or abilities that allow humans or other higher-level demons to assert control over animals may be used to subdue or control mid-level demons.

Nightstalkers

Nightstalkers also known as High Low Level demons are demons who can’t take a physical form and therefore have to rely on possession to interact with the physical world. However what makes them notable is how strong their possession ability is and how long they can stay in a host body, up to a few years if they're lucky and skilled. This makes Nightstalkers quite the force and these are often the types of demons that low-ranking Demon Hunters are dealing with.

Weaknesses

  • Deorum Ambulent (metal found in holy places) is even effective and causes even greater discomfort.
  • Holy water can burn them and temporarily weaken their powers. Salt disrupts their energy flow but may not repel them entirely. Iron can cause physical harm but might not incapacitate them completely. Holy items generate fear and discomfort but have limited impact. Since these demons rely heavily on possession, they are vulnerable to magical or spiritual barriers that prevent them from possessing a host. A skilled exorcist could easily banish them. Specific symbols or wards can be used to trap or seal these demons, preventing them from finding hosts or causing harm.

Shads

Shads also known as low level demons, like Nightstalkers, can’t take a physical form and therefore have to rely on possession to interact with the physical world. However Shads’ possession ability is notably weaker and they can only stay in a host’s body for a few weeks at best.

Weaknesses

  • Vulnerable to Deorum Ambulent (metal found in holy places), which can cause severe harm.
  • Holy water causes burning and discomfort upon contact.
  • Salt disrupts their energy and can repel them if used as a barrier.
  • Iron can cause physical harm or incapacitate them temporarily.
  • Holy items, such as crosses or religious relics, generate fear and discomfort.
  • Humans have developed specific demon warding spells or rituals to repel or banish low-level demons. These wards act as protective barriers against possession.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The anatomy of demons depend on a few factors such as their rank or the creature they are possessing at the time. Most low level demons don’t have a physical form and can only gain one through possession while some other level low level demons take the form of hellish breasts, often shaped like dogs, cats, or horses. Most high level demons have a physical form that has most of the same anatomy as humans only their lower half is that of the goat while other high level demons will have anatomy that is the exact same as humans. All demons have horns however there are seven different types of horns they can have (Sheep, Addax, Markor, Nubian Goat, Deer Alters, Saiga, and Impala). Royalty has been known to have wings that can vanish at will.

Genetics and Reproduction

Demons can reproduce sexually, though most don't find it necessary since human sinners continually transform into demons through soul corruption. However, demon DNA is exceptionally fascinating, and its study has led to the creation of the Noctis, beings that are half human and half demon.

Growth Rate & Stages

Demons grow significantly faster than humans, reaching physical and sexual maturity at a much younger age. By 17 to 19 years old, demons typically stop growing and attain their full adult size and capabilities. One of the most noticeable signs of a demon's growth is the development of their horns. This begins around age 11, with small protrusions emerging from their skulls. These nascent horns continue to grow and develop over several years, reaching their full size and shape by approximately age 16.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Due to the extereme high levels of soul energy demons burn through daily they can not substain themselves on traditional means and most instead seek out soul energy from a more direct source. For this reason every demon falls into one of two categories: Blood and Soul.

Blood Demons

Blood Demons, as their name suggest, consume the blood of other creatures and are by far the most common category of demon. Among the mostnotorious of Blood Demons are vampires, creatures of the night that thrive on the consumption of human blood. Vampires are the apex predators within this category, their longevity and strength fueled by the life essence they extract from their victims. However, not all Blood Demons reach the lofty status of vampires; low-level demons, often mistaken as Ghouls or Zombies, fall under this category as well.   Blood Demons are known to practice blood magic with a voracious appetite. They utilize the blood of their victims as a conduit for dark spells, binding souls to objects or themselves, and invoking unnatural powers. The terror they sow is often matched only by the insatiable hunger that drives them.

Soul

Soul Demons, as the name suggests, hunger for a different fare — the souls of the living. These demons are the ones humans often envision when they think of Faustian deals and infernal pacts. They are the masters of temptation, offering untold power or desires fulfilled in exchange for a human soul. While Blood Demons are more common and their horrors more tangible, Soul Demons are a dwindling breed. The act of consuming souls has fallen out of fashion over the centuries, relegated to the darkest annals of demonology. Yet, their sinister allure persists, drawing desperate individuals to bargain with the devil for their deepest desires.

Biological Cycle

When a demon sustains severe injuries that cannot be easily healed through conventional means, they enter a state of deep hibernation that can last for centuries depending on the severity of the wound. During this extended period of dormancy, the demon's body undergoes a process of self-repair and regeneration, allowing it to gradually heal from its wounds over time. This hibernation period serves as a last resort for demons facing life-threatening injuries, providing them with a chance for survival in situations where conventional healing methods would be insufficient.

Behaviour

Generally, there is a correlation between a demon's rank and their level of animalistic behavior. Higher-ranking demons tend to exhibit more refined and sophisticated behaviors, while lower-ranking demons may display more primal and instinctual tendencies. However, this correlation is not absolute. Some lower-ranking demons possess remarkable intelligence and cunning, allowing them to rise through the ranks and attain positions of power and influence. Conversely, certain high-ranking demons may retain elements of animalistic behavior, especially if it serves their purposes aligns with their nature or desires.   Intelligence and adaptability are significant factors in a demon's behavioral repertoire. Demons capable of strategic thinking, manipulation, and complex planning often achieve greater success and ascend to higher ranks. Intelligence can manifest in various forms, from keen observation and analytical skills to creativity and innovation in problem-solving. Demons who demonstrate intelligence and adaptability are more likely to navigate the complexities of demon society, forge alliances, and exploit opportunities for advancement.   The psychology of demons encompasses a wide range of motivations, desires, and fears. While some demons are driven by primal instincts such as hunger or aggression, others may harbor deeper ambitions or existential concerns. Higher-ranking demons may grapple with issues of power, dominance, and existential purpose, while lower-ranking demons may be more focused on survival, acquisition, or immediate gratification. Psychological complexity among demons adds depth to their characters and interactions, allowing for nuanced portrayals that explore themes of ambition, morality, and the nature of evil.   It's important to note that there is considerable individual variation among demons, regardless of rank. Each demon possesses a unique combination of traits, experiences, and motivations that shape their behavior and psychology. Factors such as personal history, upbringing, and interactions with other beings can profoundly influence a demon's development and outlook on the world.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Demon blood has been used in dark rituals and potions for centuries and humans have been making deals with demons for power, and other things for just as long. However the most notable use of demons has been the use of demon DNA to create the Noctis.

Facial characteristics

Demons have sharp and angular shaped faces and their eyes can vary in size and shape but the most common eye shapes are Deep Set, Protruding, Hooded, and Down turned. Demons often have top and bottom fangs but some only have one pair of fangs and some don’t have any fangs at all. Demons also tend to have slit pupils.

Average Intelligence

Demons are very intelligent, capable of both making and carrying out complex plans. They are manipulative and cunning, able to bend even the most brilliant of minds to their will. Demons live for a very long time so most demons have a deep understanding of science and math and other things of that nature. Some demons will even go undercover as doctors or scientists when they need to get information. Demons are described as realistic and practical beings, possessing a deep understanding of the world around them. Their pragmatic approach to situations allows them to assess risks and opportunities accurately, making calculated decisions to achieve their goals. Demons take great pride in their intelligence and it shows.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Like the anatomy of demons, a demon’s sensory capabilities depend on their rank and the creature they are possessing. However all demons can sense when someone is watching them as they are hyper aware of their surroundings at all times. They can all also use magic as any creature with a soul can use magic and can even sense when a soul is neutral, a soul that has a perfect balance of positive and negative energy, which is something that only they, Angels, Grim Reaper, and Gods can do.   Low level demons have the poorest senses out of all demons in hell, they are mostly blind and can’t taste or smell anything, however their hearing is shockingly good as they are able to hear a pin drop from a mile away. High level demons have near perfect senses and the highest level demons have advanced senses able to hear, see, smell, and taste better than almost any creature alive.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Demons, like their subspecies vampires, don’t have parasitic relationships with other species. Instead, they exist at the top of the food chain and interact with other creatures primarily as predators or, in some very rare cases, as potential sources of sustenance. They also don’t form symbiotic relationships for this very reason.

Civilization and Culture

Beauty Ideals

The beauty ideals of demons are quite interesting for creatures as vain as demons as while humans see things like scars or disfigurements as ugly demons don’t. They see those things as a sign of strength, and power. A sign that you survived no matter the odds and there is nothing a demon finds more attractive than power and strength. Demons dislike symmetry, nothing about them is ever put together or perfect. Demons are wild, chaotic, untamable, and free spirited.

Gender Ideals

Shads, being low-level demons, do not adhere to any concept of gender. They exist without any distinction or consideration of gender identity. Without societal constructs dictating gender roles or expectations, Shads interact with each other and the world around them based solely on individual identity and characteristics.   Among other levels of demons, there is a fluid and flexible understanding of gender. Demons do not rigidly adhere to binary notions of gender identity. Demons do not stress over gender and are generally accepting of all expressions of gender identity. Assigning a specific gender to a demon is a matter of convenience rather than a deeply ingrained aspect of their identity.   While demons may not have a fixed gender identity, some may have preferences or inclinations toward certain gender expressions. Demons are known to adapt their gender expression based on the forms they inhabit or the situations they find themselves in. They may choose forms or appearances that align with their current preferences or experiences.   In demon society, there are no rigid gender roles or expectations. Individuals are free to express themselves and pursue their interests without being constrained by societal norms associated with gender. Gender does not play a significant role in determining one's status, power, or social standing among demons. Instead, individuals are valued based on their abilities, strengths, and accomplishments.

Courtship Ideals

Most demons fall somewhere along the aromantic spectrum, meaning they do not experience romantic attraction or prioritize romantic relationships in their lives. Demons generally do not engage in traditional courtship rituals associated with romantic love, such as wooing, dating, or pursuing exclusive romantic relationships. Demons are typically polyamorous, meaning they are open to having multiple simultaneous romantic or sexual partners. Gender plays little to no role in determining romantic or sexual attraction among demons. They are bisexual or pansexual, meaning they are attracted to individuals regardless of gender. Rather than seeking romantic love, demons prioritize other forms of connection and companionship in their relationships.

Relationship Ideals

Loyalty serves as the cornerstone of demon relationships, whether they be friendships, partnerships, or alliances. Demons prioritize unwavering commitment and fidelity to their chosen companions above all else.

Average Technological Level

In demon society, technological advancements are not as prevalent or emphasized as they are in human civilization. Demons primarily rely on their innate magical abilities, supernatural powers, and ancient knowledge to navigate and interact with their environment. However, they do possess a certain level of technological understanding and capability, albeit not as advanced as human technology.

Demon Types

There are three major types of demons that resides in Hell:

Born Demons

Born demons are those who were born as demons. These demons are often born as higher level demons and are oftentimes inhuman in appearance with sharp teeth, claws, and horns. All born demons are considered children of Lilith, demon of motherhood, one of the four princesses of hell and the ruler over Prodito, one of the eight sectors of hell, even if she didn’t birth them herself.

Human Demons

Human demons are those who were born as humans before becoming demons after death. There are two subtypes of human demons: Warlock Demons and Tortured Demons. Human demons often have to work their way up the ladder as most start out as a low level demon and even then only Warlock demons have made it to noble and royal status within hell. In fact the only tortured demon that has become a royal is Lilith and that was so long ago it’s considered an outlier.

Warlock

Warlocks are beings who have pledged servitude to a higher being. They are normally humans but there have been instances of other creatures being Warlocks. It is important to note that warlocks are willingly given power by their deity/masters; they can't take it by force. Warlock demons are warlocks who have slowly over time been corrupted by their demon master and were turned into demons. The most famous Warlock demons are Akeldama Morningstar, and Elizabeth Libitina.

Tortured

Tortured demons were horrible people in life and thus sent to hell to be punished for all of eternity who later became demons. The process of becoming a demon occurs when an individual's soul becomes so thoroughly tainted by demonic essence that they undergo a physical and spiritual transformation into a demon. The transformation has only occurred in Hell where the concentration of demonic essence is extremely high due to the sheer number of demons that live there. Tortured demons don’t make it very far up the ranks but they are still beings to be feared.

Angel Demons

Angels demons are demons that were once angels before their fall from grace. This is the rarest type of demon and oftentimes the most powerful type. The most well known angel demon is Lucifer, the king of hell himself.

Demon Class

Demons are very magical powerful beings but even they aren’t proficient at every type of magic there is. So humans have taken to divining them up into classes based on the type of magical art they are most proficient in or use most often. Even the lowest of low demons have a class even if their magic isn’t as powerful as other demons.

Elemental Class

Elemental Class Demons are those who use elemental based magic such as fire or ice magic. Most demons only have the ability to use one elemental type due to this there are 6 sub classes: Fire, Water, Ice, Air, Earth, and Electricity. However royal and noble demons have been known to use as many types of elemental magic as they want so they don’t often get put into this class.

Spirit Class

Spirit Class demons are demons who use spirit magic, a mystical and complex form of magic that delves deep into the realms of the spiritual and metaphysical. Most low level demons aren’t often classified as Spirit demons due to the time and practice it takes to be good at Spirit magic.

Soul Class

Soul Class demons are demons who have the ability to manipulate souls, a rare ability for a demon that is only ever seen in high ranking demons. However it can be learned if one has the patience and there is only one subclass of soul class demons: Necromancy. These demons have the ability to raise the dead and are so common amongst higher level demons.

Alchemy Class

Alchemy Class demons are those who focus on Alchemy as their chosen magical art. Alchemy, like many powerful magical arts, requires very intense study so it is a very rare class among lower level demons. There have been higher class demons who have been put into this class and these demons are noted to be highly valued by the royalty and nobility as it shows discipline and intelligence. Those in the Alchemy class are often general for nobles and royals alike.

The Dark Arts Class

Dark Arts Class demons are those who focus on the darker forces of magic such as forbidden magical arts curses, hexes, and other dark abilities. This is another class that doesn’t have many lower level demons put into it as the dark arts require intense study and practice and should never be taken lightly. The Dark Arts is a dangerous system of techniques based around a darker side of magic that is typically used for selfish, self-serving and/or nefarious purposes. Lower level demons oftentimes don’t have the conviction or creativity needed to master such power.

Shadow Class

The Shadow Class is a sub class of the Dark Arts Class and focuses on those who use Shadow Magic, which popular among all types of demons for how easy it is to use.

Lunar Subclass

Like the Shadow Class, the Lunar Class is a sub class of the Dark Arts Class. Within it are demons who focus on the mystical powers of the moon, like Alchemy and mainline dark arts; this is a very rare class for lower level demons to be put into.

Divination Class

Divination Class demons are demons who are focused on the art of fortune telling.

Chaos Class

Chaos Class demons are demons who don’t stick to a specific type of magic. They use whatever is needed or deemed necessary at that moment. They are extremely unpredictable and dangerous for this very reason. However only one demon in history has been recorded as a Chaos Class demon and that demon is Elizabeth Libitina, one of the four princesses of Hell and ruler of Vindicta, one of the eight sectors of Hell.

Demon Threat Level

Over the years humans have developed a system for determining the threat level of a demon. Each rank has been assigned a threat level by The Black Roses, leading experts in demonology and demon hunting. Threat Level factors in not just sheer power but also intelligence and mental prowess. If a demon is powerful but stupid this lowers their threat level as they can be easily outsmarted making them less of a threat for experienced demon hunters.

Level 5

Level 5 demons are considered to be cannon fodder by demon hunters as they don’t pose much of a threat. However large numbers of them can be overwhelming to inexperienced demon hunters which is why when detailing with large groups of Level 5 demons it is recommended to keep a distance and wait for reinforcements.

Level 4

Level 4 demons are slightly more of a threat than Level 5 demons but they are still for the most part very easy to deal with. A good number of demons are labeled as a level 4 threat as most low level demons tended to fall here or a level below.

Level 3

Level 3 demons are troublesome. They can bring a town with hundreds of people to ruin. They are smart and deadly. They often require a team of low ranked demon hunters to kill them. They are dangerous and cillivans are not to interact with them for any reason.

Level 2

Level 2 demons are demons who can destroy a city with thousands to even a million people. Only the top demon hunters teams or otherwise can go against them in any way. They are highly dangerous and if spotted it should be reported immediately to the proper authority so that they can prepare for evacuation. Nobility and some high level demons are listed here.

Level 1

Level 1 demons are not to be engaged by anyone ever. They are dangerous and powerful and they can not be beaten. They can level a city with millions of people in it if they so choose to. Luckily Level 1 demons don’t see any fun in killing so many humans at once. Royalty are the only ones listed here.

Mana Points By Demon Rank

Demon Contracts

A human can summon a demon and form a contract with them. There are two types of contracts Soul and Warlock and both of these contacts have their disadvantages and advantages. A contract is finalized when a human signs their full name in their own blood.

Soul Contracts

Soul contracts are what you think of when you think of a demon contact as they are the most common. You get something in exchange for your soul. If you ask a demon for money, success or to bring back a loved one from the dead then you will get about 10-15 years to enjoy the thing you asked for before the hellhounds come to drag your soul to hell. Demon only have the power to bring someone back to life if they form a contract with a human.   If you ask for something like revenge or power then the demon will be in your service for however long it takes for you to get what you want. When this happens a sigil is branded somewhere onto the human body. The more visible the more power they have over the demon, it makes the bond stronger. The ideal place for a demon contract sigil is the eye. Of course demons are tricky and manipulative so it’s important that you are very detailed and specific about the terms of your contract. Leave no stone unturned and no ground uncovered or else.

Warlocks Contracts

Warlock contracts are when you pledge your devotion and servitude in exchange for the power to do whatever you please. This type of contract is very uncommon and only the most desperate souls will sign a warlock contract with a demon. This contract can only be broken under very specific terms and none of them have anything to do with death.

Soul

A demon’s soul known as their Demonic Essence is made of pure negative energy, something that sets it apart from other creatures’ souls which tend to be a mix of negative and positive energy with some having more of one than the other. The negative energy of demonic essence is oftentimes extremely volatile and reactive, lashing out at anything and everything around it, because it doesn’t have any positive energy to balance it out. The reason that the bodies that low level demons possess decay so rapidly is because their demonic essence is eating away at it. Demons who lack the experience, skill, and discipline necessary to control their demonic essence are often ranked low on both threat level and demon rank as they often can’t use their demonic essence with any real level of efficiency.   There are three types of Demonic Essence given that there are three types of demons. Those three types are Corrupted Grace, Corrupted Soul, and Normal Demonic Essence. When an Angel or Human becomes a demon their soul or grace gets corrupted by negative soul energy turning it into demonic essence.
