Witch Hunter Corps

This small but elite unit is every rogue wizards worst nightmare. Armed with specialized weapons, armor, and other magical items, the Witch Hunter corps specialize in hunting and subduing arcanists who have turned against the Crown. They are called upon to handle threats that have been deemed too dangerous for the rank and file members of the Saber Corps. Much of their activity is conducted in secret, away from the public eye.

They are colloquially referred to as "Null Knights" or "Spell Guards" by the Empire's citizens.

Composition

Manpower

The exact number of soldiers in the Witch Hunter Corps is unknown, though estimates range from 20-50. When on missions, they operate in cells of four to five depending on how powerful their quarry is.

Equipment

Members of the Witch Hunter Corps are equipped with weapons, armor, and other items specifically designed to combat, subdue, and capture spellcasters. The equipment they take with them varies depending on what kind of caster they are hunting. This equipment includes:
  • Weapons enchanted to deal extra damage proportional to the highest level spell slot the caster possesses.
  • Armor that heightens magical defenses.
  • Dispelling stones or other missiles enchanted to dispel magic.
  • Portable anti-magic cones/spheres.
  • Items that damage an opponent for each spell dispelled from them.
  • Collars and shackles that silence the wearer or otherwise prevent them from casting spells.

Structure

When deployed on a mission, a cell leader is chosen and an entirely new hunting cell or "Jagdzelle" is created, each member bringing something useful to the team for the mission at hand. The cell leader is the supreme authority for the mission's duration, even if another cell member was the leader for a previous mission.

Tactics

In general, after tracking down their target, if they are not willing to come quietly, the Witch Hunter Corps use their equipment to quickly nullify the targets magic before subduing them with brute force. The tactics they employ depend on the specialty of the spellcaster they are targeting. If the target is an evoker, they will deploy an antimagic field to avoid any collateral damage before physically overpowering them. If the target is a conjurer or necromancer, they may employ items to abjure summoned creatures. If the target is an abjurist, they might employ items that simultaenously dispell and damage the target.

It it not uncommon for a cell of Witch Hunters to be accompanied by an Arcanist. They provide the cell with specialized information, as well as magical support.

Training

After receiving basic training as members of the Saber Corps, members of the Witch Hunter Corps receive specialized training in the basics of each school of magic as a means to deepen their understanding of their quarry. Though not required to practice other schools of magic, they are required to learn, and be capable of casting up to third level spells of the Abjuration school.
