The War Between Heaven and the Hells
At the end of the Barren's Mythological Era, there were thirteen mortal kingdoms in the continent of Great Eethill. Seven of these kingdoms were visited by unnamed angels who gave them the resources, magics, and knowledge that allowed them to prosper over the remaining six; and after a century of helping these kingdoms, the angels finally asked for something in return. They told the nine kings that there was a forgotten ritual that would give them everything they could have possibly wanted, a ritual that would open a gate to a world where they would find true happiness.
When these unholy rituals were completed, the kingdoms fell through the ground and into the red abyss that swirls under the realms. The kingdoms collided and fused with the kingdom of devils and the kingdom of demons, becoming the realm known as the Nine Hells. The angels, now revealing themselves to be devils and demons helped the kings ease into their new home, turning them into the Lords of Hell.
Now with the demonic powers of the abyss, the Lords of Hell sent forces through the gargantuan pits the kingdoms left behind to torment the Mortal Realm and drag them down to join them. The gods finally began to intervene, sending forces of their own into the Mortal Realm to push the devils back down into the abyss. This conflict was known as the War Between Heaven and the Hells.
Devastation came throughout the entirety of the Mortal Realm. Five of the six remaining kingdoms were destroyed and became the battleground of the otherworldly soldiers. Eventually, as the demonic forces began to march towards the final kingdom, Vuruesis, the gods evacuated the kingdom and what was left of the survivors of the other five into cave complexes protected by divine will.
The mortals were to wait until the conflict's end before they were allowed to return to their lives above the surface. Five generations lived and died in those caves before the mortals lost hope. Before the gods gave them a choice. Families were given the option to either be put into a great slumber and be awakened when they could safely leave the caves, or be sent to another realm where the war couldn't reach them. The majority of the mortals chose to leave, while the ones most dedicated to their land stayed to one day reclaim their lost homes.
