Slade is a tourist, on his first visit to the island from the USA. He's a southerner but doesn't feel like he's from anywhere in particular. His family has moved around, so just general southeastern US. He came to the island because he wanted to travel around Europe, go to some out of the way non-tourist places. Somewhere more interesting than the standard tours. Just out of college, Slade is living on an inheritance from his grandfather before he starts his life being tied down to a place and a job. His grandfather got married when he was very young and had children when he was very young, and never got to go anywhere or do a damn thing, so he would approve of Slade using the money to do this. Somebody on the internet told Slade about the island, and he thought it sounded neat so he came to take lots of selfies and enjoy being without having to do anything. He doesn't want to do anything where there's a gift shop at the exit.
