Daireen
Daireen is a large, prosperous port city in the Daira Bay. Many canals connect the streets and allow goods to be transported throughout the city. Countless merchants have settled in the city, and several guilds have been established.
Daireen was one of the northernmost cities of the Preic people. In that time, over a thousand years ago, the city was called Darokles. It was a small port city, and its old walls can still be distinguished from the newer walls. The old crooked canal still shows the extent of the old city.
After The Fall of Parretoa, Darokles was abandoned and mostly left to crumble. It wasn’t repopulated until the 6th century after Parretoa, when the Kingdom of Callaern expanded into the region. Much of the city was ruined and collapsed, but the walls still stood tall. The Callaeran general who led the expansion south made his seat in the city. Almost all of the old interior of the city was razed, and the city was rebuilt. New homes, shops, and manors were built, and canals, which had recently gained popularity in Callaeran cities, were added. It didn’t take long for the new city to blossom and become an important trade port in the south.
As more merchants moved to Daireen, the city's merchants formed their own guild, which established a council known as the Merchants Court. This guild took on much of the city's administrative duties. For a time, it maintained strong ties with The Merchants' Guild in the capital. However, when the capital's merchants overthrew the last Callaeran king, the merchants of Daireen tried to follow suit. Before they could succeed, the Merchants' Guild of Daireen was absorbed into the capital’s guild. This led to swift reforms and a period of unrest. The lord of Daireen was replaced by a Magistrate, who was appointed by the capital's Merchants' Guild and chosen from the Merchants Court.
Since then, the city has been ruled by Magistrates, all from one of the three most influential merchant families in the city. The current Magistrate, Tibris, is from the Horthinbras family, who currently occupy several positions in the Merchants' Guild, both in Daireen and the capital. The Trade House, where much of the imported goods are inspected and their prices are determined, is overseen by the Horthinbras family as well. One does not have to spend much time in the city before the influence of the Horthinbras family becomes apparent; many buildings are decorated with the family's coat of arms or named after prominent members. Tibris himself is a proud and ambitious man, with his eyes set on the capital. He holds a position in the High Council of Magistrates and is planning to be the next Chief Magistrate of the Republic of Callaern.
