The Sword of Gormingard
"Gormingard, a king of the giants, pledged to sweep the invading 'small folk' from the lands that truly belonged to the giants. To fulfil this goal he sought help from their goddess, the 'Lady of the Deep Earth'. Having completed a ritual to commune with the Lady and pleading for her aid, the ground cracked and a great chasm opened up before him. From within slowly rose a gargantuan sword, as strong as a mountain and as sharp as the winter winds with runes of moonlight along its spine.
Unfortunately, a party of small folk had followed the giant king and had reached him as he finished the ritual. They ambushed the king and slew him before he could grasp the sword's hilt and draw it from the ground, never managing to gain the powers offered by the Lady of the Deep Earth. When the little people killed the giant, the runes on the sword faded and the glow died with him.
The Sword of Gormingard is now stuck in the earth on a frigid island, forever frozen in its terrestrial scabbard. Many giants over the centuries have tried pull the sword from the earth, but none have succeeded. However a prophesy is still whispered amongst the giants, that one day a hero shall rise and reignite the moon runes, pulling free the sword and leading the giants out of their hidden places to cleanse the land of the little people and return it to its rightful inhabitants."
