Null Portals

Ruined monoliths that dot the countryside of Primus, from the Maryan Reaches to the Maznah Desert. These so-called portals are likely only named so for their shape. They are oval rings of stone supported by flat, square plinths.   Null Portals register no magic, not even primal or realm magic, and all attempts to form portals in them has failed. In addition, some scholars have claimed that the stone is not nearly as ruined as it should be, given the monuments' apparent age.   While the structures do bear chips, pebbling, and the overgrowth of flora, it suffers no greater defect. No crack penetrates more than an inch or two, and as the rings are formed of a single piece of stone, there is no mortar to wear off or break.   The placement of the Null Portals is also mysterious. Some are centrepieces of ordinary towns, some stand a few miles from main roads, and others are in the remote wilderness. They have been found on mountain peaks, windblown prairies, and even the bottom of Kraken Bay. They do not seem to correlate at all to other ruins, such as those of the Old Empire. This has led some to speculate that the Null Portals predate even the presence of humans on Primus.   One thing everyone agrees on is that the portals are perfectly safe. It is a common sight to see children playing on and around them. Many villages even turn them to functional purposes, attaching swings for the young ones or hanging leathers to dry from the portal's apex.
