Neverwinter

As you crest the small rolling hills and approach from the south, you see before you great stone walls nearly 50 feet high. They curve from west to east, starting nearly at the shore line of the ocean to the west and curving to the east, towards a river that seems to cut the city in-twain. Turrets, nearly 60 feet tall, break up the wall every 100 feet or so. You see two entrances, the one closer to you, nearer the coast and one east-ward, towards the river. Both of these entrances are framed by two larger, taller towers; each set with parapets and windows, for archers and defensive maneuvers.   As you approach, you see soldiers adorned in armor, each emblazoned with the symbol of a horned-eye, with three inverted exclamations below it. Some of these soldiers have helmets, others do not. Soldiers patrol the parapets on top of the wall, while others, some mounted on horseback, patrol the grounds. These are the city guard.   As you enter, you notice that the archway is nearly 22 feet tall and there is a raised portcullis above you, neatly set within tracks in the stone wall. It is nearly 4 inches thick and big enough to easily span & block the entry, should it be needed. The archway spans the entire width of the wall making it nearly 20 feet deep, with heavy iron-clad oak doors towards the interior, providing for a second line of defense from the portcullis. Walking thru the archway, to your right and left you see a door. These are each approximately 6 feet tall, heavy reinforced oak doors. You can only surmise that these grant access to the top of the wall or barracks & armory within.   As you exit the archway, into the city, the brief darkness that shadowed you, turns to the bright light of day.   What only a few decades ago was a city torn asunder and wracked by the eruption of nearby Mt. Hotenow and the Spellplague, now before you, you see businesses & crowds of bustling people. As you make your way thru the crowds, your senses become filled with sights, sounds and smells. Inter-mingling scents hit your nose; those of breads and sweets from bakeries, fresh hewn wood from carpenters, coal & fire from smiths. You see different businesses, some with lavish banners, other with basic signs: bakeries, oddities, woodworking shops, basic metallurgists, jewelers and even maybe a bank. Many of the businesses have their own buildings, while there are a few individuals hawking wares on the street. No one pays you mind as they all bustle about their business. You hear off in the distance construction from structures being built and renovated. You even hear from the distance what can only be a crazed old voice spouting nonsense and gibberish, to any who will listen.   Before you lies the City of Skilled Hands; Welcome, to The City of Neverwinter.
