Seafolk

Seafolk are a divergent offshoot of Skyfolk who arrived in the Sea of Ondine when their island was mysteriously transported to, then crashed down into this new world.
Their separation from their old home resulted in changes as they adapted to their new environment. Most notably, their ancestor's short and squat build have been left behind in favour of being tall, though they kept the broad frame, making them even stronger and sturdier. Their skin and hair also tend to be darker that most Skyfolk, a combination of their ancestors being from higher altitudes and the more tropical climate of their new home promoting further darkening.   They previously had a monachy, founded by Mona of Wyndhyll, however this was recently disbanded by Florence East with a more standard government now taking over.

Culture

Average technological level

Seafolk are about on par with other groups, technologically speaking. They received a decent amount of technology from the people of Home who were had managed to refine their powered aircraft to the point of being able to visit other worlds, while the Seafolk were still focused on sail ships.   Their Webnet network is one of the more complete ones in the worlds, mostly due to it being a lot easier to set up cables through water and solid land than the forests of Home (strong environmental protection rules make for slow construction) and the open air of The Sky (gravity makes things difficult)   While they do have access to powered boats, they largely prefer to use sails. This is due to both limited amounts of fuel and the fact that powered motor noise causes discomfort and pain for Merfolk, as well as the motors themselves being actively dangerous for them.

Foods & Cuisine

Their food maintains a lot of similarities with those of Skyfolk, however it has had to evolve to counter the loss of access to the usual ingredients.   Skyfolk food uses meat sparingly due to animals being pretty space inefficient on their small islands compared to plant-based food, Seafolk, however, are not limited by this so much. Their diet consists of significant quantities of fish as it is plentiful in the surrounding waters.

Common Myths and Legends

They still carry the folklore of the Starstone Goddess from their Skyfolk ancestors. Like many modern Skyfolk, Seafolk don't necessarily believe that this figure is an actual goddess, or even someone who even existed. Most see her more as a conceptual "Lady Luck" type figure, someone to direct your wishes for luck towards, to help you manifest that luck yourself.   It's not uncommon for people to have a piece of starstone as a lucky charm of sorts. Often, this is in the form of jewellery or a polished piece placed on a shelf or in a pocket, rarely in the familiar goddess figurine form found in homes in The Sky.

Historical figures

Mona of Wyndhyll is often refered to as the first of the Seafolk. She was nominated as their first queen as a requirement for recieving help from the neighbouring Merfolk.   Florence East was the final Queen of the Seafolk. She finished the work of the prior queen, her mother, Evalyn East in putting an end to the Seafolk royal family's reign. She has since retired to a quiet life, running a small café.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Seafolk culture puts a lot of weight on well maintained hair. This can be taken a lot of ways, ranging from simply keeping it neat and tidy, to customising and accesorising it.

Courtship Ideals

Originating from the southern regions of the sky that the Seafolk's ancestors came from, it is popular for couples to work out to be strong enough to lift their partner. The actual origin and purpose of this tradition is unknown, but has been carried on simply because people find it fun.   Unfortunately, this tradition isn't always possible in cases such as disabilities or simply the size difference being too different (usually when a Seafolk is dating a non-Seafolk, seafolk tend to be pretty heavy), but people will still often try and honour the tradition in one form or another.
