Synaptic Unbinding Potion

Synaptic Unbinding Potion, also called SUP, was first created by the mage Ethyl Hendrake at the Institute of Magical Analytics at Quarowl in 2964 APC.

History

Early adoption of Synaptic Unbinding Potion was uncritical and enthusiastic but limited in the first instance by the caution of the Moderators' Council, a caution which arguably brought about its demise, although council members could not have allowed for the perversity and evil of Zemdath the Terrible who had grown powerful and rich smuggling SUP illegally from Tinturbean to Myruthea and Punjuki.
Suspicion as to the possible adverse side effects of using too much SUP only surfaced later, after the death of Zemdath when the Free Union of Magical Scholars started production and costs were lowered, allowing for more widespread adoption. These early and informal criticisms crystalised into something more serious with the publication of Synaptic Suicide : The Case Against Synaptic Unbinding Potion at the end of 3082 APC, a treatise collecting the evidence that SUP was harmful in the long term and addictive. The author of this work, a certain Tobias Renfew would go on to become Provost of the Free Union of Magical Scholars and in this role, took strong steps to ensure the institution would no longer manufacture and supply the product he considered so dangerous to the health of mages. Unfortunately for him, opposition to his stand would result in his eventual assassination in 3113 APC, after which the interupted production of SUP was resumed at the FUMS. The IMA never ceased production.
Although widely used throughout the Time of Terrors, SUP ceased to be a viable aid to magic use after the Nexorin Pathogen became endemic to Magicians' End in the 37th century. It is no longer possible to obtain it in any great quantity, although researchers into arcane history may be able to make small doses.

Discovery

Synaptic Unbinding Potion was developed at the Institute of Magical Analytics. The motivation for the research program was to find a way to reduce the dependence of mages on Arcane Amplification Perfume, which for many hundreds of years had only been available in limited doses from the rich monopoly suppliers at Highloft. The breakthrough that allowed for the production of SUP came in 2964 APC following the work of Ethyl Hendrake.
