Tobias Golkin
Tobias Golkin
Tobias Golkin was a mage at the Free Union of Magical Scholars at the end of the 31st century and the beginning of the 32nd. This was an early phase of the Time of Terrors, after the death of Zemdath the Terrible, the first of the terrible mages and the herald of others to come, but before Synaptic Unbinding Potion became easily and universally available.
Whilst he was still a relatively junior academic he took a great interest in the effects of Synaptic Unbinding Potion, not so much on the dazzling improvements in arcane power it produced, which had already become apparent to many, but rather on the minds and brains of the mages that used it. Even from the beginning, not long after it was discovered, there had been rumours of ill effects. Golkin collected the evidence and wrote an influential and controversial treatise called "Synaptic Suicide : The Case Against Synaptic Unbinding Potion" which was published on 1st Pruth 3082 APC.
Golkin became the Provost of the Free Union of Magical Scholars on 1st Pruth 3105 APC, when he won an overwhelming mandate after the death of the previous incumbant.
His opposition to the production and sale of Synaptic Unbinding Potion was well known and he introduced a ban on the trade within the Free Union of Magical Scholars, effectively leaving the Institute of Magical Analytics as the sole monopoly supplier.
Re-elected to the role of Provost in 3110 APC he was killed in 3113 APC, by a group of dissenting mages who wished to being SUP production back into the FUMS, an incident known as Golkin's Last Stand.
After Golkin's death, SUP production resumed in the Free Union of Magical Scholars but the legacy of his ideas did not die. There was, rather, a continued vein of skepticism towards SUP which was only confirmed as the Time of Terrors unfolded. Ultimately (according to the most favoured theory), it was scholars and radicals in the same tradition who produced the Nexorin Pathogen in the 37th century, and by so doing, finally achieved the aim Golkin had sought to achieve of curbing SUP production once and for all, even if the means were more drastic than he could possibly have envisaged.
