In -156 BL, Sonene was not even born when her father, Eorl Masen Aralana, died alongside the King Thyaras at the hands of the Cuth. With the return of the troops and the news of her husband's death finally reaching her the mother, Eloimya of Rhyvas. The Eorl and Eloimya had been married only 14 months before he went campaigning with the King to his death.
The widow Eloimya knew that her and daughter's days in the seat of the Eorl of Stone-and-Sea were numbered. With the young deaths of the last two Eorls, the Aralana line was thin and represented by an elderly man and her infant daughter. The regent, the King's sister Moralei, had made it clear that the Cuth campaign was folly and that any who had supported it got the result that they deserved in the end. Eloimya knew that Moralei would eventually get around to remembering her husband's boasts and jests about the upcoming campaign.
Fearing that she may be in danger, Eloimya fled to the home of her friend, a daughter in the Naarel family. Her disappearance caused enough of a disruption and concern that she appeared publicly to assuage people's fears. Ironically, Moralei was fairly busy with holding the kingdom together to notice right away that there was no Eorl of Stone-and-Sea. It was clear that she had noticed upon heading north to quell a small uprising when none of their retinue had accompanied the King earlier.
Her mother moved her at night to the lands of Rhyvas who were old family friends. Sonene grew up on the lands of the Rhyvas family along with that of a few neighbors.
