Azure Gate
Blue waters, tropical climes, and the air of mystery that comes from eastern unknown. A wonderful place for someone of my temperament, and inquisitive nature.
Situated as far east as current maps go, or at least the ones that can be referenced by public archives, Azure Gate sits as the last outpost of civilization one may encounter before striking out into the vast shadowy unknown. Seeing it from the distance an eyeglass covers, one wouldn't assume that dozens of exploratory convoys and expeditions make it their final stop before being cut loose from supplies and contact and being forced to rely on luck and wit to survive.
The settlement itself is rather small in the grand scheme of things, closer to a village than a expeditionary base, with simple wooden housing to boot. The docks look impermanent, though well constructed, and the population of the place can't me much larger than two hundred, children included.
As if to counterbalance the smallness of the settlement, the island of Azure Gate is the largest in the area, with a vast jungle enclosing the landscape until it reaches a volcanic rise that stabs into the sky. Thankfully, the peak does not belch smoke as of yet. From this jungle, the settlement of Azure Gate gathers the resources to fulfill it's purpose as a stopover.
In the middle of the village large pits have been dug into the bedrock the village stands, which translate into cavernous cellars that spread out, web-like, beneath the earth. These pits, which they call Gavélee, store a vast deposit of resources that are open for purchase by explorers before they strike out. Food, water, all the essentials. Timber, uncut and cut for any repairs incurred on the journey there. Tools, weapons, ammunition, and most importantly a stock of booze created right there on the island and aged right there. It is fantastic, sweet and light in a most enticing way. Most intriguingly, they do not require money for their goods and, in fact, accept trades of most any variety. The tastes of home carry a great weight to those that live at Azure Gate. The wheat-flour needed to make Dosian bread is worth several times it's weight in whatever a visiting vessel may need. The other payment they accept is trades of people.
I know what you are thinking, but they do not participate in the trading of slaves or indentured servants. No, they do not ask for those that are unwilling to be provided, but instead simply more people to live within the colony. Crew who do not wish to continue past Azure Gate, travelers looking to stay for a time, or simply those that have no where else to go. They will take them in, and as far as I can ever tell in my visits, take notably good care of all who arrive.
Demographics
Government
The governor seems to have supreme command of the island, though the need to exercise such control is a rare sight.
Defences
Around the settlement is a thick, masterfully crafted, wooden palisade. More than just a series of logs driven into the ground, it has watchtower, gantries, and even caps made of stone to keep the top of the wall from being set alight.
For as long as the colony has been in operation, it has had a population of one singular Human. As strange as that is, it is far stranger that the only human on the island is not the governor, but the Administrator to the governor, who is an Otonomoi.

Author's Notes
I did not know if it was relevant to the overall lesson, but for the life of me I cannot find any sort of charter for the colony. The village does not fly any colors, recognized or otherwise.
