Reishi Island
Reishi Island is the largest island of the Nelek island chain and the home to the Reishi Oligarchy. Its large size, favorable position in the center of multiple trade routes, and the defensibility of its bay all contributed to Reishi Island becoming a major center of maritime trade in the Asamaline Expanse.
Geography
Reishi island is a large landmass, about 700 square miles of land (roughly 40 miles North-South, and thirty miles East-Wes), with a varied landscape shaped vaguely like a crab's claw. The space between the "pincers" of the claws forms the Sharp Gold Bay.
The south of the island is dominated by the small Clarenvista mountain range which, on top of offering some excellent views of the island and surrounding waters, contains a wellsprings that residents of the island with clean drinking water without them having to rely on rain. This wellspring spills down the mountainside, forming a water fall and eventually the small Clarenrun River, which in turn feeds into a man-made reservoir.
North of the Clarenvistas are two small forested regions - the Ayrith forest in the east and the Ardglass glade in the west - each at the base of the island's "pincers." The forested land slowly gives way to sandy dunes and rocky outcroppings, and at the northern tip of each pincer, some coconut and banana trees can be found.
Ecosystem Cycles
Many birds flee the island when a heat or cold storm is approaching, heading instead for an island with a cove to take shelter in. Meanwhile, the lizards, lemurs, and foxes all take to some kind of burrow or rocky cleft to avoid the elements. Of course, mating season beings when Preservation passes overhead and peters off in intensity from there.
The only species not to adhere to these typical trends is the stollusk, whose population rises during heat and cold storms - especially frenzystomrs - and experiences explosive growth each time the Primal ring passes overhead.
Fauna & Flora
While much of the island has been dominated by Reishi cities or farm land, the forests, mountaintops, and the northernmost pincers still act as home to many birds, lemurs, lizards, foxes, and even a few seals. The Reishi have also brought in some animals not native to the island - chickens, pigs, sheep, and cows - to act as livestock.
More notably, the waters around Reishi Island teem with dangerous aquatic life. From sharks to eels to the ever-important stollusk, swimming in the seas around Reishi for longer than one must is inadvisable.
Natural Resources
The people of Reishi enjoy a diverse island, complete with forests for logging, seas and a lake for fishing, mountains rich in minerals for mining and quarrying, plenty of open plains in the foothills for farming and ranching, and of course, the stollsuk-rich waters.
Tourism
Reishi Island is usually visited for its bay, which is an excellent shelter from the Adgen storms, but it is not without natural beauty. The Clarenvista mountain trails are beautiful, especially with they have been kissed by the frost of a cold storm, and the waterfalls that cascade down from the Clarenvista Spring are a sight to behold. While taking the peaks, one is likely to stay in Korosa, but it is also possible to camp on several small plateaus around the mountains.
