Helm, The Vigilant Guard

Deity, Core Pantheon

Helm is the deity of protection and vigilance. He is the patron of guards and soldiers who seek protection and guidance in their lines of work.

Description

The Vigilant Guard is depicted as a tall man in full plate armour. It is somewhat battle-worn and the blade he carries sheathed to his side is rusted showing his age in the Everplanes.   He is seen as cold and emotionless, but in truth, he is more simply a stern and disciplined watcher. He rarely appears to his followers, only rarely giving visions or advice when matters were dire. Followers believe he watches over them and silently ensures safety and that justice is served to those who deserve it.   Among the gods he keeps few allies and few enemies, though is constantly wary of the Gods of Destruction following the Cataclysm.

Activities

Helm gives both protection and the ability to protect to his followers.   While passive in his interaction with mortals, his divine duty is to watch over the Divine Mythal to ensure all balance is kept in the world.

History

When Helm was born into the Everplanes during the Era of Creation, he came baring a heavy load, symbolised by his suit of armour. As the Eternal Sentry he knew that the end of the world would inevitably come on his watch. Thus, he is wary of the beings who cause senseless destruction.   Helm first noticed the threat of Tharizdun as he observed the Primordials being rallied against the gods. He fought alongside temporary allies against this common foe after approving the plan devised by Ioun.   During The Divine War, Helm stayed back in his divine realm watching over the planes surrounding the Prime Material. When the Divine Mythal was cast and the Divine Lattice came into being, Helm devoted his existence to seeing it maintained and stood guard over it, thus being given the name of the Eternal Sentry.

Worshippers

Churches of Helm are often seen as bastions of stability and safety in civilised areas. Worship is often joined by barracks and homes for guards, soldiers of military tacticians and workers. Those who worship Helm are expected to protect anyone who needs it, and to be dedicated to their tasks. Discipline and honour was key.   They often wore polished suits of armour and their Hierarchy was often strict and militaristic, sometimes embedded into the military itself.

Tenets

  • Be vigilant. Stand, wait, and watch carefully. Be fair and diligent in the conduct of your orders.
  • Protect the weak, poor, injured, and young, and do not sacrifice them for others or yourself. Demonstrate excellence and purity of loyalty in your role as a guardian and protector.
  • Know your foes and anticipate attacks. Careful planning always defeats rushed actions in the end.
